Scarce first edition. Printed by T. Spilsbury, London, for the author. Beautifully bound in later medium-brown quarter polished calf, with medium-brown linen-like buckram boards. The spine with original burgundy morocco title label set in, and with simple gilt-stamped rules and other linear decorative devices. Generally unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. The binding is quite clean and the leather has a smooth hand. New pastedowns and FEPs. Text block firmly bound in. 10.25 x 8.5 inches. Antique laid paper, rag content. Numerous unnumbered preliminary pages, including title page, dedication, preface, contents, and list of subscribers, and lvi and 288 numbered pages, plus page sections 3A through 3R containing XIII appendix sections, including Explanation of the Common Seal, plus conclusion section. Engraved illustrations include: 1) A fold-out plate, A Plan of the Abbey of St. Mary in Furness, about 12.25 x 16.5 inches, light off-setting, else remarkably fine. 2) A double-page plate, The East Prospect of the Ruins of Furness Abbey in Lancashire, about 8.5 x 14 inches, some creasing along the left edge margin, the plate detached from the text block, else very good. 3) A full-page plate of the seal of the Abbey of Furness, about 5 x 3.25 inches, foxed, else very good. Original front FEP with tidewater marks. Pp. lii-liii with offsetting, as if from acidic news-print article laid in; same as to pp. 2-3. Light age-toning throughout. Else a Very Good copy. An interesting early work in the literature of the Gothic Revival. It includes an accurate account of each part of the building.
