This is not a bilingual edition. Text in German only, not in English. First edition, not the much later facsimile edition. Printed by the Frommann's book printing shop, [Hermann Pohle], Jena. Almost certainly recased as a custom edition. Bound in medium brown three-quarter niger (goatskin), the spine with crisp gilt-stamped morocco label with title, author and rules. The boards in a light gray-green linen-like buckram. Unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. The binding is exceptionally clean. Strong hinges. Text block firmly bound in. 10.75 x 7.5 inches. T.E.G. Immensely clean pastedowns and opposite FEPs. With 448 numbered pages, interspersed with 159 B&W illustrations, some full page. Two lovely fold-out B&W illustrations, opposite pp. 294 and 360; tiny crease to lower right corner of latter fold-out. Also with extensive bibliography and index of names. Front FEP with previous owner stamp -- the Queens County Medical Society -- to the upper right corner, opposite publisher's oval image of a lion. Very small 1/8 inch stain spot at fore-edge of pp. 40 and 41, not at all into text, quite minor. Else an immaculate copy. Near Fine. You are unlikely ever to encounter a finer copy. The author describes the German baths from prehistoric times to the Carolingian period, the bathing traditions of the ancient Germans, the bathing life in the Middle Ages, the health fountains, the German mineral baths, among others, and a contribution to history of German water healing.
