Complete in four volumes. This is copy no. 42 of a limited edition of 165 copies. Printed by Drukkerij Sinte Catharina, Bruges. Binding by J. de Brunoff, Paris, and with many illustrations reproduced by that firm. Additional graphics by Carl Schünemann, Bremen, and by Van Leer & Co., Amsterdam. Handmade paper by Van Gelder Zonen. Watermarked "Singraven" paper, presumed rag content. Contemporary bindings, with buckram spines resembling coated vellum, and with coated paper hardboards. The spines with crisp gilt-stamped lettering. The boards of a rich turquoise background and with elaborate gilt design in a rococo style, at once exuberant and restrained. The boards with light rubbing, especially at the extremities. Exceptionally clean bindings. Text blocks firmly bound in. 13 x 10 inches. Edges deckled to a handsome effect. With X, 252, 268, 286 and 325 numbered pages. With approximately 133 full-page, mostly B&W plates and with colored coats of arms. Tissue guards present. Pocket envelope at rear of Vol. 4 contains six full-color, fold-out maps, as called for. All maps in pristine condition save for a small crease to one of the maps. Recent endpapers. We can find no apparent evidence of foxing or soiling in the volumes. An immensely clean set of four volumes. Respectfully read, if read at all. A Very Good Plus to Near Fine set. Rare in any condition. "Extremely fine publication on splendid paper, printed in a very limited edition and never put in trade. A standard work constituting a full documentation of the history of Twente and giving details from an economic and legal point of view, genealogies, the agrarian crisis in the 18th century, the curious feudal and manorial rights, the situation in the so-called Marken, etc." Singraven itself is a grand estate near Denekamp in the municipality of Dinkelland, region of Twente, Province of Overijssel, in Eastern Holland. The manor house was constructed no later than 1381. Singraven belonged to the bishop of Utrecht, then became an abbey, and afterwards a private house with various different owners. Now it is a museum containing mainly furniture, paintings, books and other objects from the XVII and XVIII centuries.
