Presumed first paperback edition of the first British edition, 1986. Originally published by the University of Chicago in 1946. Printed and presumed bound in Worcester, Great Britain. Handsome color patterned wrappers. 8 x 5.25 inches. With xvii and 277 numbered pages. Fold-out map and fold-out genealogy, both pristine. Previous owner name and location in small and neat ink hand to the front author bio page. Else an immensely clean book. Light page waviness, minor. Probably read yet the pages are tight and the wrappers do not fan. Rated a Very Good copy. The author, born in Turkey and raised in India and Iraq, became in 1933 the first woman faculty member at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago. The book treats of the Abbasid dynasty and particularly of Khaizuran and Zubaidah, the two "queens" of the book.
