Presumed first printing of the first edition. NOT ex library. Printed and bound in the USA. Probably one of about 1,000 copies but not so stated. Maroon buckram binding, with gilt lettering and blind-stamped border to the front board and gilt lettering to the spine. Very clean and well-preserved binding. Moderately bumped spine head and tail, with light abrasion. Moderately bumped and abraded corners. Hinges with a little play but text block firmly bound in. 16 x 12 inches. (40.5 x 30.5 cm.) Tissue-guarded frontispiece of lovely, sepia-tone drypoint plate. Thirteen unnumbered pages of text, including an introduction and a table of contents. Also with 246 numbered pages of B&W plates and illustrations, including sketches in pen, pencil and drypoint, and photographs by the author, and with measured drawings by Louis Skidmore. The archival architectural photos are not only of scholarly value but also are a poignant reminder of a vanishing England, as quite a few of the structures have since fallen into disrepair or have been demolished. Upper corner of front FEP with gift inscription in a blue ink hand. Rear pastedown bears tiny sticker of bookseller. Else we can find no evident demerits. A very clean copy. Respectfully read. Lacking the dust jacket. Rated a Very Good Minus copy.
