First American edition, presumed first printing. Printed and presumed bound by Princeton University Press. Attractive reddish-brown buckram binding, with gilt-stamped lettering to the spine. Moderately bumped spine tail, and with fairly sharp corners. The binding is exceptionally clean. Slight cracking between the title page signature and the following page, cosmetic issue. The text block remains firmly bound in. 10.75 x 8.5 inches. Text block firmly bound in. With 292 numbered pages, and with 100 B&W figures interspersed throughout the text, and also with XXXIII plates, either full-page on white glossy coated stock or pull-out on beige lightly-coated stock. Some offsettings to the FEPs opposite the pastedowns. Number "2638" in a tiny and neat ink hand to an upper corner of the rear pastedown. Else an exceptionally clean volume, and with light evidence of shelf life. Very gently read. No remainder marks. No DJ present. A Very Good copy.
