Presumed first printing of the first edition. Printed and bound in India. Cinnamon brown buckram binding, with crisp white-stamped lettering to the spine. Unrubbed and exceptionally clean. Gently bumped spine head and tail, and with sharp corners. Note that the front hinge is cracked and threatening to separate between the copyright page and the dedication page. However, there are no missing or loose pages. 8.5 x 5.5 inches. With xxiii and 348 numbered pages of text, and with XLIII full-page B&W plates featuring 90 objects, drawings and archival photos. The plates on coated stock. One small vertical ink line in the margins of p. 139 and p. 201 and two in the margin of p. 205. A few pages with very small dog-ear creases at the upper corners. Else very presentable and clean internally. The full- pictorial dust jacket is not price-clipped. DJ with significant chipping at the spine head and tail. DJ in a new Mylar protective wrapper. A Good Plus copy in a Good Plus DJ. A rarely found work by this prolific author, an expert in South Asian art.
