This is a bilingual edition in English and in Japanese, the principal text being in Japanese. Printed in Japan. medium gray cloth spine, with crisp, black-stamped lettering to the spine Ivory-colored paper hardboards, with black-stamped lettering front and back. The binding is generally clean. 10.25 x 7.25 inches. Moderately bumped spine tail, and with sharp corners. Text block firmly bound in. With color frontispiece,162 numbered pages, XXXV full-page plates (Plates I, II & III are in color), plus iv and v pages. All color plates are full-page and on medium-weight, semi-glossy stock. No remainder marks. The text pages are somewhat age-darkened. Else a clean copy. No DJ, [as issued?]. A Very Good Minus copy. This book is a study of an early Eighth Century tomb. "Generally speaking, the ancient tombs found in Japan are said to have been built during the period between the Third and Eighth Centuries... The cultural center in the ancient-tomb age was in Yamato and the present Tokyo district was remote from the center of cultural activity... The practices of burying valuable things in the tomb still persisted in the provinces for some time, even after they had been abandoned in the Yamato district following the advent of Buddhism."
