Presumed first printing of the first British edition. Translated from the German. Composed, printed and bound in West Germany. 11.5 x 9 inches. Medium blue buckram binding, with crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the front board and to the spine. Gently bumped spine tail, and with fairly sharp corners. Very faint spotting towards top of binding, else an exceptionally clean binding. Textblock firmly bound in. With 176 numbered pages, and with white silk-satin ribbon page marker. With B&W drawings of 52 guls and a pull-out map of Turkestan. The map is in lovely condition. And with 100 full-color plates on semi-glossy paper, plus 19 monochromes. A bit of age-yellowing to all page edges, as is not uncommon with this volume. At the bottom of the front pastedown and the opposite FEP there is a very small light brown smudge, about ½ inch. Else a very clean copy. The glossy paper, full-pictorial dust jacket entirely present but showing its age. Some wrinkling, wear and laminate separation, especially at the DJ spine head and tail.
