Offered is Plate XVIII from the Second Series of fungi prints by Sarah Price. This is a mid-19th century [1865] hand-colored botanical lithograph from "Illustrations of the Fungi of Our Fields and Woods. Drawn from Natural Specimens. Second Series." This lithograph was etched by Walter Fitch after Sarah Price, and was printed by Vincent Brooks. This is a beautiful, hand-colored lithographic plate, and appears as if it were the original watercolor of Sarah Price. The complete Second Series contained 20 full-page plates, several fungi to each plate, and was originally bound in green textured pictorial cloth boards. Plate size approximately 12.3 x 9.8 inches (310 x 250 cm). The plate with a few tiny, pin-point sized dark or reddish-brown dots, NOT foxing, and in any case trivial. Else we can find no demerits. No tears or creases. The plate newly and professionally mounted with hinge tape on a sturdy archival-quality backing and framed using a lovely light olive mat board, bevel-cut. The print as matted measures a standard 18 x 14 inches. As noted, this book by Sarah Price is the second of a series and it is the more difficult to find of the two. Plate XVIII includes: Figures 114. COPRINUS IIENDERSONI. ln the hot-house at Bitterley Court.; 115. POLYPORUS SQUAMOSUS. On trunks of trees, especially ash.; 116. POLYPORUS SULPHUREUS.; Bitterley. On a gate post. August.; 117. GEOGLOSSUM DIFFORME. In a wood near Ludlow. September.; 118. CLAVARIA INEQUALIS. In a wood near Ludlow. October.; 119. BOVISTA PLUMBEA. In pastures. Very common.; 120. THELEPHORA SEBACEA. In Bitterley Wood, on grass. August.; and 121. AGARICUS RUGINOSUS. Bitterley, in grass-fields. October. Rated a Very Good Plus print in an As New Mount/Mat.
