Presumed first printing of the first American edition; author's foreword dated April 1950. Printed and presumed bound in Great Britain. A non-circulating ex-library copy and with few of the usual ex library markings. In the original heavy-duty binding. Medium green buckram binding, with fairly crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the front board and to the spine. Clean and well-preserved binding with gentle bumping to the spine head and tail and with fairly sharp corners. Some minor fading of the fabric along the gutters. The text block is securely bound in. 12 x 9.25 inches. With xiv and 223 numbered pages of text, plus unnumbered pages of 192 full-page B&W plates. Heavy coated stock for the plates. The text secton interspersed with numerous plans and figures, several in color. No staining, internal foxing or tears observed. A very clean copy, and fairly tight. Gently read. A Very Good Minus copy. A heavy book.
