Publication No. 14 of Sir John Soane's Museum. Edited from the original manuscripts by Arthur T. Bolton, Curator of the Museum. Technically ex-library but with no ex-library markings apart from a discreet institional stamp in blue ink to the contents page. Brick red buckram binding, with faded title to the spine. There is moderate abrasion damage along the gutters and a one inch square piece of buckram at the spine head is loosening. Boards somewhat tender. Nevertheless text block firmly bound in. Moderately bumped corners. 11.25 x 8.75 inches. With frontispiece B&W plate, 200 numbered pages of text, 119 full-page B&W plates on heavy coated stock, and a list of publications of Sir John Soane's Museum. Internally very clean save for some light age yellowing at the page edges and the occasional light fingering mark. Respectfully read. No dust jacket present. A Good copy. Scarce in any condition. Thanks to Isabel Colgate for the following commentary: "The architect Sir John Soane [was] an inveterate collector of antiquities.... Soane was a mildly paranoid character, who in spite of his success as an architect felt he had been misunderstood by his contemporaries."
