An English language publication. Presumed first printing of the first edition, 1840. Author's preface dated March 1840. Printed by Levy, Robson and Franklyn, London. Presumed bound in London or vicinity, possibly by Westley, Son and Jarvis, London. NOT ex-library. Contemporary dark buckram binding, the spine overlaid with green bookbinder's tape, onto which the original buckram spine has been backed. Both boards with crisp gilt-stamped design in a triangle shape and with blind-stamped decorative motifs near the corners. The backed spine with somewhat faded gilt-stamped lettering, especially so near the tail. Overall a clean binding, with some scuffing or rubbing to the boards and to the lower third of the spine. Gently bumped spine head and tail, and with bumped and abraded upper and lower corners of the front board. Text block firmly bound in. 11.5 x 7.5 inches. New pastedowns and FEPs. Original front FEP with gift inscription of in a neat ink hand and dated May 17, 1980. All page edges deckled to a handsome effect. With XX and 219 numbered pages of text. Note that pp. 171 through 180 are inserted out of sequence, between pp. 152 and 153. With a charming map, as called for, full-page and hand-colored. Also with 67 B&W or sepia-tone engravings [steel-cut?], including head-pieces as well as full-page plates, and with small B&W woodcut illustrations sprinkled throughout the text. Light to moderate foxing to the preliminaries and intermittent foxing to the internal pages. The engravings, save for occasional off-setting or spotting, are clean. Very tidy and simple bookplate of previous owner to the front pastedown. Else a very clean copy. Gently read. A Very Good Minus copy.
