First published in 1908. This is the stated third edition, revised throughout. Author's preface dated August 1923. Printed and presumed bound by Butler & Tanner Limited, Frome and London. Medium brown buckram hardboard binding, with crisp black-stamped lettering and design to the front board and to the spine. Moderately bumped spine head and tail, with fairly sharp corners. Small red ink blotch just under the title on the front board, else an unsoiled binding. 10.25 x 7.75 inches. Front hinge cracked and somewhat tender. T.E.G. Fore- and bottom edges attractively deckled. With xx and 297 numbered pages, followed by a two-page compilation of reviews of the first edition. With XLI plates, all B&W save for the color frontispiece plate. All the plates appear to be free of age spotting or other demerits. The plates with tissue guards printed with notes. Mild-offsetting from the pastedowns to the opposite FEPs. Rear pastedown with tiny sticker of previous bookseller. Else an exceptionally clean and attractive volume, with light evidence of shelf life. Gently read. No remainder marks. A Very Good Minus copy. The frontispiece in this edition is a colored reproduction of a Sung painting in the famous collection of George Eumorfopoulos.
