First printing of the first edition in book format; at least some of the letters in this book had been originally published in the Morning Post. Author's preface dated September 10, 1900. Printed and bound by Spottiswoode & Co., London, and by Aberdeen University Press. Mottled red buckram hardboard binding, with crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the front board and to the spine. Gently bumped spine head and tail, with fairly sharp corners. Lightly soiled binding. 7.5 x 5 inches. Text block firmly bound in. Lightly deckled page edges to a handsome effect. With frontispiece portrait of Ian Hamilton, xii and 409 numbered pages, and with all maps and plans called for, including fine pull-out map at end of book, March from Bloemfontein to Pretoria, map in shades of black, pink, brown and red. 32 numbered pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of the volume. A blank [?] front FEP has been removed. No age-spotting observed. A very clean and tight volume. Gently read. No remainder marks. A Good Plus copy. One of the author's earliest works, and a continuation of the author's book, London to Ladysmith via Pretoria.
