Stated fourteenth edition. Complete in three volumes, including the supplementary volume. Printed by Virtue and Co., London. Presumed later half-leather bindings, unsigned but in the style of Root & Son, in deep blue polished morocco, with crisp gilt-stamped rules to the boards and with crisp gilt-stamped flourishes and lettering to the hubbed spines. Handsome marbled paper hardboards. Generally unbumped spine heads and tails. Fairly sharp corners with a touch of rubbing, except that upper corners of Vol. III are moderately bumped and abraded. Almost no observable scuffing to the boards or leather and on the whole very clean and presentable bindings. Hinges strong. Text blocks firmly bound in. 7.25 x 5.25 inches. T.E.G. With handsome marbled paper pastedowns and FEPs. With viii, 499, 482, vi, 3 and 124 to 263 numbered pages. The first two volumes with frontispiece illustration. The supplement volume with numerous full-page sepia-tone plates. As to all volumes, scattered foxing throughout. To a rear FEP in each volume, tiny sticker of previous bookseller. Else very clean. Very Good copies. Scarce in any condition. An exceptionally handsome set of bindings, and a pleasure to hold in hand.
