First edition of this classic work. With principal text in English and secondary text in Japanese. 11 x 7.75 inches. Contemporary brown buckram binding with fairly crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the front board and to the spine. Spine head and tail bumped and abraded and with corners moderately bumped. The rear gutter with a rip along half the length. Top edge gilt. Both hinge tender. Some cracking or giving between the page signatures of the book. Clean pastedowns and FEPs. With 576 numbered pages, plus additional pages of adverts. With XVI full-page plates, including color frontispiece plus 15 collotypes, plus 577 illustrations in the text. Very light age toning to the edges of the pages. Plates IV and V and page 10 detached but present. Front pastedown with the handsome book plate of Frederick George Lloyd. Else the interior is clean.
