First edition of this classic work. With principal text in English and secondary text in Japanese. 11.5 x 9.25 inches. Contemporary decorative cloth binding in a faded terra cotta color with crisp gilt-stamped designs and lettering to the front board and to the spine. Spine head and tail moderately bumped, and with corners still fairly sharp. Exceptionally clean binding save for a verdigris-color spot 1/8 inch by 1 1/2 inches at top edge of front board, fairly minor. All edges gilt. Front hinge tender. Some cracking or giving between the page signatures of the book. Clean pastedowns and FEPs. With xliii and 453 numbered pages. With 16 full-page color reproductions and upwards of 700 illustrations. Very light age toning to the edges of the pages. Pages 245 and 401 and perhaps elsewhere with marginal notes in Japanese in neat and tiny ink hand. Else the interior is exceptionally clean. With all plates and pages called for. Rated Very Good Minus. This is one the finer copies of this work that one is likely to encounter, as the book is often found disbound and with missing pages.
