This is a bilingual edition with principal text in Japanese and an author's preface in English. Author's preface dated May 1918 [Taisho 7]. Album of Old Japanese Prints of the Ukiyo-ye School, reproduced from the Collection of Ken-Ichi Kawaura. Believed to be from a limited edition of 150 copies. 15.5 x 10.5 inches. Consists of two cord-sewn volumes and a folder. The first volume contains text and six full page reproductions of ukiyo-e prints, five of which are in color. The second and larger volume contains text and approximately 120 pages with single or multiple B&W images of ukiyo-e prints. Original silk-covered boards of gold brocade to the larger volume, purple cords, paper label on front cover. The pages and covers of both volumes are immensely clean, with scarcely a fingering mark to be found. Original patterned cloth folder, with bone [?] toggles. Very moderate wear and slight fading to the folder. A Very Good Plus set of books in a Very Good Plus folder. Scarce in any condition and perhaps the rarest title by John Stewart Happer. From the author's preface: "The collection belonging to Mr. K. Kawaura has long been known to collectors of Nishiki-ye... here one may study prints which are rarely offered for sale. Besides the many fine examples of famous prints, there are many which have never previously come under my observation -- a fact which in a measure attests to their rarity."
