8.75 x 5.75 inches. European-style beige paper over-wrappers, with black-stamped lettering and an embossed gilt seal stamp. Wrappers slightly age-darkened but quite clean. With ii and 112 numbered pages and with a color plate (affixed to the front wrapper) and with 17 monochrome illustrations, including reproductions of Japanese woodblock prints. On the front FEP in a neat black ink hand possibly the author's signature, and below that his inscription, "To J. P.-F. [Joseph Rous Paget-Fredericks 1903-1963], souvenir of the Happer lecture which he, Lady C. Iwada, for D.A. [Dora Amsden], a memory of their extreme kindness, August 1931 [and] November 1934." An exceptionally clean copy. A Very Good Minus copy. Slipped in is a Near Fine copy of "Appendix: Questions and Answers for Students." On the front page of The Appendix, in a neat black ink hand, the inscription, "The little sketches were intended partly for the Happers Japanese students at Wasada [sic] University, Tokyo, and the added articles on Japanese prints make the book of value to all students of Japanese art. [possibly signature of] Dora Amsden" From the private library of Herbert McLean Evans. Evans [1882-1971] was a highly regarded U.S. anatomist and embryologist. He was an ardent collector of rare books and of Japanese ukiyo-e prints. All inscriptions and signatures likely genuine.
