The provenance of the book surmised from the book plate and writings at the front of the book. Probably the book was purchased new by Morgan Shepard [1865-1947]. The firm of Elder & Shepard, San Francisco, published about 40 books from 1898-1903, and included a strong focus on Japanese art. This copy given by Shepard, probably before he left San Francisco around the time of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, to Dora Amsden "D.A." [1853-1947]. Amsden wrote at least two books on Japanese prints, these books published by Paul Elder and Company, San Francisco, formerly Shepard and Elder. In 1938 she gave the book to her friend and protégé Joseph Rous Paget-Fredericks [1903-1963]. Eventually the book was acquired by Herbert McLean Evans [1882-1971], with his initials in soft pencil to the front board. Evans was a highly regarded U.S. anatomist and embryologist. He was an ardent collector of rare books and of Japanese ukiyo-e prints.
