Two companion volumes, one primarily about landscape prints from Hokusai to Kyosai, the other about figure prints from Moronobu to Toyokuni. The presswork was completed in April 1924. Each volume is one of 300 copies printed on Van Gelder Zonen paper at the Gilliss Press. 9.25 x 6 inches. Hardboards bound in a lovely speckled medium brown Japan paper, and with beige paper spine labels with black lettering. Very lightly bumped spine heads and tails. All corners sharp. The bindings are generally in very good condition and apparently not age-darkened. The text blocks are firmly bound in. Fore- and bottom edges deckled to a handsome effect. With 93 and 89 numbered pages. Each volume with color frontispiece and with several monochrome illustrations, all full-page. On the front pastedown of each volume are two small and discreet ex libris stickers. A very clean set of volumes, and rather tight. Gently read. Each volume in the original light-duty white slip case, the cases somewhat blemished. A Very Good copy. Good Plus slip cases. From the private library of Herbert McLean Evans, with his initials in soft pencil to the front board. Evans [1882-1971] was a highly regarded U.S. anatomist and embryologist. He was an ardent collector of rare books and of Japanese ukiyo-e prints.
