David Ren is a Chinese art collector. His introduction to the imperial courtyard rocks and the catalog entries for the 80 illustrated examples deal with the imperial taste and aesthetic preferences for rock connoisseurship, the diversity of rock types in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the unique use of Sumeru pedestals in the display of imperial courtyard rocks, and the function of the rocks in the context of Chinese gardening arts.
