Published 1989. Printed and bound in Japan. This book has primary text in Japanese and secondary text in English. Brick red silk [or silk-like] binding, with crisp black-stamped lettering to the spine and a crisp gilt-stamped image to front board depicting five birds in flight. Unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. Exceptionally clean binding. 11.5 x 9 inches. Handsome pictorial pastedowns. As to the text in Japanese, with 304 numbered pages in Japanese, interspersed with 89 stunning full-color, full-page plates, some of which are fold-out. Identification and commentary appear in Japanese opposite each plate page. All plates specially printed on coated stock and tipped in. As to the text in English, with LXVII numbered pages in English including Introduction: The Characteristics of the Art of the Heian Period and Notes on the Plates. An immensely clean copy, and very tight. Either unread or very gently read. Fairly trivial semi-crease to the blank sheet opposite folding plate no. 45. With the original, soft plastic, clear dust jacket. Also present is the slipcase of brown paper hardboards with gilt-stamped Japanese characters to the spine and rubbing front and back. Slipcase with a 3-inch split starting along ther bottom but holding fast. A Near Fine copy in a Near Fine DJ in a Very Good slipcase.
