Presumed first printing. First American edition. Printed and bound in the USA. Immensely attractive pictorial boards, including beige linen spine with crisp dark red lettering and with boards covered in a charming floral repeat design paper, dark red on beige. 9.25 x 6.25 inches. Unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. With xi and 439 numbered pages, plus XCIV B&W plates of photographs illustrating buildings with variants of the Greek Revival style. The plates are on matte medium-weight stock. Also with severl B&W figures, architectural plans, etc. An exceptionally clean copy, and very tight. Gently read. Lovely pictorial DJ, unclipped. Moderate rubbing and wear to the DJ, especially to the spine head and tail. DJ in a clear Mylar DJ protector. A Very Good Plus copy in a Very Good DJ. An important scholarly work giving a broad and inclusive picture of the development of Greek Revival architecture in America. Strictly speaking, this style was not a revival but rather a native American development springing from indigenous historical, social, economic and intellectual movements, many of which are explored in some depth. Together with a list of articles on architecture in some American periodicals prior to 1850. This book also serves to document a lost America inasmuch as most if not all of the buildings pictured have long since been demolished.
