Presumed first printing of the first American edition, 1922. Author's preface dated February 1922. Printed and presumed bound in Great Britain. NOT ex-library and NOT an abridged edition. In the original heavy-duty binding. Medium taupe buckram binding, with crisp gilt-stamped horse design to the front board and with gilt-stamped lettering to the spine. Clean and well-preserved binding with moderate bumping to the spine tail and lower corners. Hinges are starting, as is usually the case with this edition, but the text block remains securely bound in. Deckled fore edge and bottom edge, to a handsome effect. 11.25 x 9 inches. xvii and 159 numbered pages of text, plus unnumbered pages of plates. With 100 plates, of which 12 are in color, the remainder in B&W. Heavy coated stock for the plates. Plates have tissue guards with over-printed plate identification data. Almost all the guards are pristine. No writing, staining, internal foxing or tears observed. Note, however, that the sheet constituting page 63/64, while present, is fully detached. A very clean copy, and fairly tight. Gently read. A Good Plus copy. Somewhat scarce. A heavy book.
