Stated first American edition. Text printed in the USA. Black buckram spine with crisp gilt-stamped lettering, and with cranberry-colored paper hardboards. 12.5 x 9.5 inches. Unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. Text block firmly bound in. 92 numbered pages interspersed with numerous full-page and half-page tipped-in color plates, all on semi-glossy stock. An exceptionally clean book, inside and out, and quite tight. Either unread or very gently read. No dust jacket, as issued. Housed in a light-duty cardboard slipcase covered in cranberry paper and with a large and attractive paste-on pictorial label. In the lower left-hand corner of the front of the slipcase is a tiny label from the publisher with the price as issued. An exceptionally clean slipcase and without damage. Also included is the original plain cardboard mailer. A Near Fine copy in a Near Fine slipcase in a Very Good Plus cardboard mailer. From the private collection of the great English author W. Somerset Maugham, a collection including works by many of the French masters of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Maugham knew or had met a number of the artists personally; Matisse, for example.
