About Our Appraisal Service

An appraisal is a valuation of property provided by a professional appraiser. We prepare comprehensive reports for our clients which provide our opinion of current values for books, prints and ephemera. Preparing an appraisal involves research, analysis of all pertinent information, and the proper experience, knowledge and judgment to make a reasonable and supportable opinion of value. We have over ten years of experience in that regard.

We primarily offer appraisal services for scholarly, antiquarian and art books. We are also available to appraise antique Japanese prints. Our business performs appraisals for probated estates and for trusteeships and conservatorships with a mandated need for valuations as well as for private organizations and for individuals who wish to bring their valuations up to date.

We maintain a bright line between our appraisal activities and our bookseller activities. This is because there is the appearance of a conflict of interest, and sometimes an actual conflict of interest, between appraising and book dealing. We will never initiate a request to buy books or prints that we have appraised, thus mitigating against the possibility that we will under-value items with the motive of later purchasing those same items.

We have voluntarily adopted the professional standards of the American Society of Appraisers and we subscribe in full to those standards. See Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice.

Please feel free to contact us if we can be of service to you regarding appraisals. We will listen carefully to your wants and needs and we will be happy to discuss methodology, time-lines and fees with you.
