Notes on Tahiti, Account of the Mission, Oramond, Rev. J. M.
18 Oramond, Rev. J. M. Notes on Tahiti, Account of the Mission
Ann Arbor, MI University Microfilms, Inc. First Edition Thus Pamphlet Very Good Plus 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
No publication date but presumed issued in the 1970s or 1980s. This is a bound photocopy of a hand-written journal. The journal was written in English in long-hand script in 1849. 91 unnumbered pages in pamphlet format. Complete as printed, no missing pages. 8.2 x 5.7 inches. Light gray paper wrappers, and with black and red lettering to the front wrapper. No soiling, inside or out. A clean copy of a very rare document. A Very Good Plus copy. Reverend Oramond went to Tahiti in 1817. He was apparently in good standing with his fellow missionaries for some years following and in the missionary Registry for 1826-1832 there are accounts of his work, in which he speaks most favorably of the progress of his work and the state of the Tahitian people. Subsequent events evidently so changed his view that his journal is full of condemnation of the character of the people and the conduct of the mission. For example, the priggish, moralistic and exasperated Reverend characterizes Tahiti as "the filthy Sodom of the South Seas." He favored the French Protectorate in the 1840s and incurred the displeasure of his fellow missionaries and the Society. He was refused further support by the mission but his salary was thenceforth guaranteed by the French government.
