originally published in French in 1962. Presumed printed and bound in the USA. Bound in a very handsome nubby ecru, linen-like cloth, with crisp black-stamped lettering to the spine and a pristine paper label to the front board. Unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. 12.25 x 9.75 inches. With 322 numbered pages, and with numerous tipped-in, full-color, full-page plates as well as with numerous B&W illustrations. A very clean copy, and reasonably tight. No remainder marks. Gently read. The full-pictorial DJ, although not price-clipped, is rubbed and has substantial edge wear, especially at the spine head. A Very Good Plus copy in a merely Good Minus DJ. Nevertheless a desirable copy.

This is copy no. 61 of a limited edition of 275 copies only. Printed and bound by the Lent & Graff Company, NY. Photographs by Lawrence X. Champeaux, NY. Photogravures by A. W. Elson & Co., Boston. Approximately 13 x 10 inches. Originally issued bound in semi-stiff beige wrappers with over-wrappers. This copy presumed bound by original or early owner, Howard Young Gallery, in contemporary oxblood-colored half morocco, with crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the spine, and with oxblood-colored buckram boards. Hubbed spine to a handsome effect. Front hinge slightly tender and with 2-inch clean crack along the top of the front gutter, generally a cosmetic issue. Gently bumped/abraded spine tail and lower corners. Binding generally unsoiled and well-preserved. A most attractive binding. Gray paper pastedowns and FEPs. Text block firmly bound in. Fore- and bottom edges attractively deckled. With several unnumbered pages of introductory text, plus unnumbered pages in which 924 auction lots are itemized. With approximately two dozen full-page photogravures depicting interior views of the mansion plus numerous B&W photogravures with additional views, including the exterior and interior. Also with many photographs, referenced by lot number, of various furniture and furnishings. This volume also includes Ground Floor Plans of Mansion as two double-page spreads: basement plan, first floor, second floor, third floor, fourth floor, and studio. Small oval purple ink stamp of previous owner to the top corner of the front pastedown. Front FEP with a 3-inch piece of clear tape near the bottom corner, quite minor. Following FEP with the number 112 stamped neatly to the upper corner. One or two text pages with a light blemish. Else an exceptionally clean copy. A hint of age toning to all pages, quite minor. No remainder marks. A Very Good copy. Scarce in any condition. This book is the auction catalog for the sale of the mansion, and contents of said mansion, of Henry James Smith and located at 871 Fifth Avenue, New York. The sale took place over the course of five days, January 18-22 inclusive, 1910. The mansion, designed by architect William Schickel, was completed in 1883. Eventually it was almost entirely rebuilt by the firm of McKim, Mead & White. Demolition was scheduled for 1942.

Presumed first printing of the first edition. NOT ex library. Printed and bound in the USA. Probably one of about 1,000 copies but not so stated. Maroon buckram binding, with gilt lettering and blind-stamped border to the front board and gilt lettering to the spine. Very clean and well-preserved binding. Moderately bumped spine head and tail, with light abrasion. Moderately bumped and abraded corners. Hinges with a little play but text block firmly bound in. 16 x 12 inches. (40.5 x 30.5 cm.) Tissue-guarded frontispiece of lovely, sepia-tone drypoint plate. Thirteen unnumbered pages of text, including an introduction and a table of contents. Also with 246 numbered pages of B&W plates and illustrations, including sketches in pen, pencil and drypoint, and photographs by the author, and with measured drawings by Louis Skidmore. The archival architectural photos are not only of scholarly value but also are a poignant reminder of a vanishing England, as quite a few of the structures have since fallen into disrepair or have been demolished. Upper corner of front FEP with gift inscription in a blue ink hand. Rear pastedown bears tiny sticker of bookseller. Else we can find no evident demerits. A very clean copy. Respectfully read. Lacking the dust jacket. Rated a Very Good Minus copy.

This is the first and only issue of the magazine, Arroyo Craftsman, and was published October 1909. Publication of issues was contemplated on a quarterly basis. One of an unstated limitation. 9 x 6 inches. Lightest spruce blue wrappers, with substantial amounts of black-stamped lettering to the front and rear wrappers and, to the front wrapper, a sunburst design in golden yellow with a hand-held hammer and the motto "We Can" in a ribbon. The wrapper paper has faded evenly to a blue-beige. The wrappers are very clean. With 67 numbered pages, plus xv numbered pages of adverts in the rear. There are numerous B&W illustrations, including photo-plates, drawings and plans. A 1 inch tear to the rear wrapper has been expertly repaired; else no pre-existing faults. An exceptionally clean copy. The wrappers protected by a new, heavy-duty, clear Mylar wrap-around. A Very Good Plus copy. Extremely scarce in any condition. In October 1909, influenced by William Morris, the Stickley brothers and the Roycroft community, James published the "Arroyo Craftsman" through the Arroyo Guild Press. For the serious collector of books and writings on the California Arts and Crafts movement and, in particular, the Pasadena center of that movement, this magazine issue will take its place as one of the crowning glories of the collector's library.

Probably one of about 1,000 copies but not so stated. Quarter ivory-colored buckram spine, somewhat soiled, with olive drab paper hardboards, somewhat rubbed. Gilt-stamped lettering to the spine and beige title label to the front board. Some light chipping to the paper binding along the intersection of the buckram. Lightly bumped and abraded spine head and tail. Wear to all four corners such that they are rounded rather than sharp. Hinges with a little play but text block firmly bound in. 15.75 x 10.75 inches. (40 x 27.5 cm.) Decorative pastedowns and opposite FEPs. Tissue-guarded color frontispiece. With XL and 344 numbered pages. Includes a small section on Lutyen's designs for furniture. Throughout the book are numerous B&W archival photographs, sketches, elevations and floor plans. The archival architectural photos are not only of scholarly value but also are a poignant reminder of a vanishing England, as few of the structures have since fallen into disrepair or have been demolished. Also with 16 numbered pages of adverts for additional books offered by the publisher. A small library stamp to the top of the title page. On the margin of p. vii, in soft pencil, an unobtrusive gift note. Pastedowns with evidence of library use-slip removal. Else the interior appears very clean, and with scant evidence of age-toning.
