Published by Dentsu on the occasion of their 90th anniversary. Presumed first and only printing. Published 1991. Printed and bound in Japan. This book has primary text in Japanese and secondary text in English. Celadon green silk [or silk-like] binding, with crisp black-stamped calligraphy to the paper label on the front board. Unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. 1-inch by 1/8-inch stain near the tail of the spine, else an exceptionally clean binding. 16.75 x 11.75 inches. With xxii and 238 numbered pages. With 100 stunning full-color, full-page plates, some of which are fold-out. Identification and commentary appear in Japanese and in English opposite each plate page. All plates specially printed on heavy coated stock. An immensely clean copy, and very tight. Almost certainly unread. In a matching slipcase of celadon green silk on hardboards with gilt-stamped Japanese characters to the front board. Slipcase with a 2 square-inch stain in the lower corner of the front board, merely a cosmetic issue. A Fine copy in a Very Good slipcase. A presentation of art images cataloged according to the four seasons, the images taken from pictorial calendars issued by Dentsu over the years.

Published by the Free Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution, Oriental Studies No. 3. An English language publication with secondary text in Chinese characters. Presumed first printing of the first edition, 1946. Printed and presumed bound in Baltimore, MD. Ex-library but with very few ex library markings and from a non-circulating collection: the Research Library of the Avery Brundage Collection, San Francisco. In the medium-duty brown buckram binding, with crisp gilt-stamped lettering, and with a small brown design to the front board to the spine. Fairly clean and well-preserved binding. Moderately rubbed and bumped spine and tail and corners, with the upper front corner moderately abraded. Hinges tender but holding nicely. 14 x 10 inches. With v and 108 numbered pages of text consisting of commentary on the plates, interspersed with maps of China, B&W figures and 50 full-page duo-tone plates. Apart from the the discreet library markings, a very clean copy. The plates themselves are free of library stamps. Gently read. A Very Good Minus copy.

He was an ardent collector of rare books and of Japanese ukiyo-e prints.

Heavy coated stock with numerous color plates, some full-page. Unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners, except for a semi-bump to the uppercorners, quite minor. A lovely copy, clean and tight. Respectfully read and with the occasional English word in pencil appearing at footnotes. A Very Good copy.

Plain beige wrappers with black-stamped lettering. Tiny paper losses at spine head and tail. Wrappers are age-yellowed and lightly soiled and with previous owner name and address on back wrapper. Text block remains sound although signatures are threatening to separate. With many unnumbered pages of text, listing in detail 931 lots offered for sale. Also 102 B&W plates, being reproductions of Japanese woodblock prints. Light foxing near the preliminaries. A number of notations in pencil throughout. Else a clean copy. A Good Plus copy. The sale is widely regarded as one of the most important sales of the first half of the 20th century of Japanese color prints. So listed at p. 10, The Evolution of Ukiyoé: The Artistic, Economic and Social Significance of Japanese Wood-Block Prints, by Takahashi Sei-Ichiro, 1955. Crisp black-stamped lettering to the front over-wrapper and spine. Front with photo-reproduction of a bust in a dark greenish hue. Almost no bumping to the spine head and tail, and with fairly sharp corners. The top three inches of the front wrapper and over-wrapper are separating near the spine head, not threatening the overall integrity of the binding. Sewn binding, with 36 pages of text followed by XL full-page, heliotype plates, the plates printed by L. Marotte. Opposite each plate are commentaries corresponding to the plates. In the bottom corner of the last several pages, not into the text or images, are several tiny raised bumps, as if blind-stamped. Cause undetermined and merely a cosmetic consideration. A few speckles of light foxing to the prelliminaries. This book presents very well. Note that several of the pages are unopened, as issued. An exceptionally clean copy, inside and out. A Very Good copy.
