The binding is generally clean. 10.25 x 7.25 inches. Moderately bumped spine tail, and with sharp corners. Text block firmly bound in. With color frontispiece,162 numbered pages, XXXV full-page plates (Plates I, II & III are in color), plus iv and v pages. All color plates are full-page and on medium-weight, semi-glossy stock. "Generally speaking, the ancient tombs found in Japan are said to have been built during the period between the Third and Eighth Centuries... The cultural center in the ancient-tomb age was in Yamato and the present Tokyo district was remote from the center of cultural activity... The practices of burying valuable things in the tomb still persisted in the provinces for some time, even after they had been abandoned in the Yamato district following the advent of Buddhism."

Unbumped spine heads and tails, and with sharp corners. Text blocks firmly bound in. Lovely patterned pastedowns and FEPs. Vol. I with 63 numbered text pages, followed by numerous unnumbered pages of plates. Vol. I with 43 numbered text pages, followed by numerous unnumbered pages of plates. All plates in vivid color, with many full-page, and all on heavy, semi-glossy stock. Immensely clean inside and out, and quite tight. Either unread or very gently read. No dust jackets, as issued. In the original custom box. The lidded box with royal blue paper over hardboards. The bottom corner of the box, formerly loose where the fore-edge meets the bottom-edge, has been deftly repaired with color-matched bindery cloth tape. The box remains quite serviceable and in any event has done an excellent job of preventing any harm to the two volumes. A Near Fine set of volumes in a Very Good box.

With the exception of the first title page and the captions to the plates this book is entirely in Sinhalese. Charcoal-color buckram spine with marbled paper hardboards in shades of purple, ocher and charcoal. The front gutter of the spine is splitting almost three inches from the top. Moderate wear along the edges of the boards. Text block has detached from the underside of the spine but remains attached to the rear board, however tenuously. 8.5 x 5.5 inches. Top, fore- and bottom edges with speckled red decoration. 149 numbered pages. Most pages with little evidence of age-toning except that pastedowns and opposite FEPs are rather toned. With 15 full-page monochrome plates in tints of various colors. Also with one full-page full-color plate, with tissue guard. This copy rated in Good condition. Scarce in any condition. This book was reissued in 1911 by the Vidyadarsa Press, Colombo.
