Arms of the Dutchess of Kendal
4 Arms of the Dutchess of Kendal
England Very Good Plus Fine Art Print 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall Hogarth, William
This is a late 18th century English engraving after an oil painting by William Hogarth [1697-1764]. Arms of the Dutchess (sic!) of Kendal (and Munster; German Countess Ehrengard von der Schulenburg, Princess of Eberstein). Presumed circa 1790. Inscribed: Hogarth invt., A. M. Ireland sculpt. Not examined out of shrink-wrapped matting. Observable print size at least 6.5 x 5.5 inches. Size as matted is 11.5 x 10.5. Over all very clean save for very light toning/foxing along the left side of the left arms bearer. Niemeyer Rare Books provides to following interesting information: "Obviously unmarried and without issue, the lady is said to have been close to George I of Great Britain of the House of Hanover and followed him soon after his accession to the throne (1714), where he endowed her from 1716 on with several titles of nobility. Due to various German specimens, yet indeed also some absurdities, Hogarth seems to have worked the arms still before the deeds of 1716. Trusler not least praises the simplicity and elegance in the attitudes of the two young lateral arms bearers."

Beskrivelse over Danske Mynter og Medailler. I Den Kongelige Samling
7 Beskrivelse over Danske Mynter og Medailler. I Den Kongelige Samling
Copenhagen, Denmark N. Møller og Sön 1791 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Minus No Jacket Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall Fehrenholtz, G.; Bradt, F. L.
Description of Danish Coins and Medals, the Royal Collection. Two volumes. First volume with title page dated 1791, Dansk Medailler og Mynter det Kongelige Kabinet. Second volume continues with part of the 1791 text and plates and also contains [in whole or in part] the addendum of 1794, Tillaeg til Beskrivelsen over Dansk Mynter og Medailler, I den Kongelige Samling. Edited by Georg Nielsen, Frederik Adam Müller and others. This substantial work was printed in antiqua by the Danish printer Nicolaus Møller. The large vignettes of the title page and of the introduction [Indledning] page of the first volume were engraved (and possibly drawn) by F.L. Bradt. The title page, in neo-classic style, and the part-title pages were engraved by G. Fehrenholtz. Elephant folio. 17 x 12 inches (424 x 289 mm). LXIV, 240; [ii], 619-812, [2] pages, with 91 full-page engraved plates in the first volume and with 118 full-page engraved plates in the second volume. According to some sources, but unconfirmed, there were 344 engraved plates in the complete three-volume edition, i.e., the two-volume set issued in 1791 and the supplement issued in 1794; missing in this copy offered for sale are, presumably, text pages 241-618 and corresponding plates for C. IV, F. III and C. V. Rebound. Bindings appear to be circa 1940s or 50s. Rust colored buckram binding, with spines lettered in gilt. Moderately bumped spine heads and tails and corners. As to each volume there is a crack between two gatherings [between the half title page and the title page of the first volume and between pages 600 and 641 of the second volume]. More a cosmetic issue than a structural issue, as the text blocks remain firmly attached to the bindings. Strong and fairly thick paper, not brittle or fragile. Occasional light spotting to the pages and plates, much less than one might expect in volumes of this age, and with most plates free of any spotting or soiling. First and only edition of the principal work on Danish numismatics. This monumental work is illustrated with finely engraved plates based on the massive collections of historical coins and medallions held in the Danish Royal Collection. Featured are coins and medallions of kings of the Oldenburg line, beginning with Christian I and ending with Christian VII, who was on the throne at the time of publication of this book. Featured are Christian I, Hans, C. II, Frederick I, C. III, and F. II. Largely absent are C. IV, F. III and C. V. [except for Plate III, Vol. II, Section "Samling af Medailler over Kongerne af den Oldenborgske Stamme" and Plates I-III, Vol. II, "Sigiller"] Continuing with F. IV, C. VI, F. V, and C. VII. The edition of 1791 consisted of two volumes: Text-volume: LXIV, 819, (4) pp. Plate-volume: engraved title page, 17 engraved part-titles and 319 (all) full page engraved plates. The edition of 1794 was an addendum or supplement and consisted of title page [2] 36 pages of text and, apparently, up to 25 full page plates. Bibliotheca Danica II:587. Slipped in is a lovely copy of the catalog, Ancient, English and Foreign Coins and Medallions, Christie's London, December 8, 1987, in which a similar copy of this book was listed at Lot 316.

Della grandezza dell' originale, a copper engraving presumed from Le antichita di Ercolano, Tome IV
13 Della grandezza dell' originale, a copper engraving presumed from Le antichita di Ercolano, Tome IV
1792 Very Good Plus Fine Art Print 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Piroli, Tommaso
This is an Italian copper engraving after a design by Tommaso Piroli, ca. 1752-1824. This print is labeled Plate 3 [Tav. 3] and is presumed to be from "Le antichita di Ercolano, Tome IV" but this is not certain and it may instead be from the artist's mural series of Roman ruins. In any case a most charming engraving in desirable condition. Presumed circa 1792 as the 6 volumes of Ercolano were published between 1789 and 1807. Possibly inspired by copper etchings from "Raccolta di Pitture d'Ercolano", a collection of prints which was published between the years 1752 - 1762. The prints of both editions were made from frescos and artifacts excavated in Herculaneum. Not examined out of shrink-wrapped matting. Observable print size at least 6.25 x 7.75 inches. Size as matted is 12.5 x 14. Over all very clean save for very light toning/soiling, almost imperceptible.

Unbumped spine head and gently bumped tail, with gently bumped corners impressing the top corner of the pages, quite minor. 1 inch tear to the front wrapper along the spine head, a cosmetic issue only and hardly noticeable. With xvi and 420 numbered pages. With numerous monochrome archival photos, line drawings and plates detailing items from the inventory of the museum. The book with no age-toning apparent. Many unopened pages, hence unread. An exceptionally clean copy, inside and out. A Very Good copy. The third catalogue from a series of catalogues highlighting collections of art and antiquities acquired by the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek.
