Jan Yoors Tapestries
7 Jan Yoors Tapestries
New York, NY Jan Yoors Studio 1981 Presumed First Edition Unbound Very Good Ex-Library 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Yoors, Jan
A catalogue of art works created in the last years of the artist's life and assembled as a tribute after his death. Undated but presumed 1981. The publication's copyright date is 1981. Moreover, a heavy glassine insert, perhaps unique to this copy, states, in a neat ink hand, "With all our good wishes for Christmas [1981] and for all of 1982." Presumed printed in the USA. Technically ex library but with almost no ex-library marks. The glassine insert has a "received" stamp in light ink dated December 30, 1981, and there is also a discreet library stamp on the reverse blank side of the first sheet of illustrations. We can find no other markings, ex library or otherwise. Plain beige paper wrappers, lettered in black on both sides. The wrappers with repairs in clear tape to the spine. Oblong, 8.25 x 11.5 inches, unfolded. Reproduced here are lithograph cartoons of actual tapestries created and woven by the artist. With 13 sheets of heavy matte paper in the form of broadsides, i.e., with printing on one side only, the sheets measuring 8.25 x 23 inches unfolded. The first double-sheet is a B&W key to the 19 tapestry cartoons featured in this publication. The remaining twelve double-sheets with large-format reproductions of all 19 cartoons in vivid color. Apart from the two ex-library marks noted and the amateur tape repairs to the wrapper this is an exceptionally clean copy. A Very Good copy. Scarce in any condition. The following is excerpted from the wrapper notes: "Jan Yoors [1922-1977] was a writer, photographer and sculptor, as well as a tapestry artist. He was his own designer, he made his own cartoons, and he was his own artisan in his own studio. At the time of his death Yoors left behind a number of working cartoons which he had yet to translate into tapestries. After his death his wife continued to execute these working cartoons."

Verve, the French Review of Art, Volume Two (2), Numbers Five (5) and Six (6)
11 Verve, the French Review of Art, Volume Two (2), Numbers Five (5) and Six (6)
Paris Éditions de la Revue Verve 1939 First American Edition Paperback Good Plus Magazine/Periodical Folio - over 12" - 15" tall
This is the English language edition of Verve, an artistic and literary quarterly, Vol. 2, Nos. 5-6, Paris, July-October 1939. Note that two of the articles are in French: La tiare écrite and Visages réels ou imaginaires. Special double World's Fair issue. Printed in Paris. Typography and process color work, Imprimerie des Beaux-Arts, heliogravure in colors, Draeger Frères, heliogravure in black and white, Néogravure Lithography, Mourlot Frères. 14 x 10.5 inches. Cover illustrations back and front by Aristide Maillol. Wear along the edges of the wrappers. Note that the front cover is completely detached and has two tears to the top left corner and a large crease at the bottom right corner. The spine has largely perished. The sewn threads of the binding of the text block are loosening. With 178 pages, many of which are unnumbered. (A printer's error lists p. 120 as p. 20.) Contents include Texts, Paintings, Illuminations, Lithographs in Color, Drawings, Paintings, Statues and Photographs. With all color lithographs called for, including Guys (4), Braque, Rouault, Derain (2), Leger, Bonnard (2), Matisse (2) Klee, and bas-reliefs (2). Also with numerous color and monochrome illustrations. We can find no missing illustrations or pages. The interior is generally very clean except that, oddly, at some point in the past, two sheets (illustrations?) were crudely taped in, one to the reverse of the front wrapper and the other to the reverse of the rear wrapper. Those taped-in sheets are now missing and, as the tape decomposed and yellowed over the years, have left crude tape remnants. The tape marks transferred to the front title page and to the rear FEP. In any case all the color lithographs are impressively clean and intact, as are the illustrations in general. Rated a Good Plus copy. One of France's most famous art periodicals, and published from 1937 to 1960, Verve is renowned for the quality of its production and the breadth of subject matter.

Fifty Drawings By Aubrey Beardsley, Selected from the Collection Owned by Mr. H. S. Nichols, Beardsley, Aubrey [spurious]
15 Beardsley, Aubrey [spurious] Fifty Drawings By Aubrey Beardsley, Selected from the Collection Owned by Mr. H. S. Nichols
New York, New York, U.S.A. H. S. Nichols 1920 First American Edition Decorative Cloth Very Good No Jacket Limited Edition 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall Beardsley, Aubrey [spurious]
This is copy no. 221 of the first American edition, privately published in an edition of 500 copies printed for sale in the United States, and apparently signed in black ink on the limitation page by the publisher, H. S. Nichols, but not so guaranteed. Printed and presumed bound in the USA. Black buckram binding with crisp gilt-stamped lettering and art nouveau style design to the front board and slightly faded lettering to the spine. Exceptionally clean binding as to the front board and spine; rear board with very light soiling. 12 x 9.25 inches. Moderate bumping and abrading to the spine head and tail, and to the corners. Rear hinge giving slightly but text block remains firmly bound in. Unnumbered pages, including title page, table of contents, and 50 full-page B&W plates of drawings alleged to be by Aubrey Beardsley. In fact all 50 are forgeries. 47 reprinted (as spurious works) in The Collected Drawings of Aubrey Beardsley. See checklist no. 197. Each plate page preceded by a sheet stating the title and size of each drawing. As to every page, light to moderate age-toning along the edges, not into the plates themselves. Front pastedown with the handsome B&W ex libris plate of Merrill Rosenthal and depicting Eve in the Garden of Knowledge, with serpent and book. Rear FEP with a clean, 1 inch diagonal dog-ear at the bottom corner. No remainder marks. Else a very clean copy, and rather tight. Respectfully read. A Very Good copy. All in all an attractive copy of a somewhat scarce work featuring what are falsely claimed to be previously unpublished Beardsley drawings, a number of which convey a rather sinister eroticism consistent with the style of Beardsley. According to Mark Samuels Lasner, A Selective Checklist of the Published Work of Aubrey Beardsley, "The drawings, exhibited, with 20 others, at Nichols' bookshop, 17 East 33rd Street, New York, 14 - 19 April 1919, were at once denounced by A. E. Gallatin and Joseph Pennell. According to Gallatin, Haldane Macfall believed them to be the work of 'at least two forgers,' probably Nichols and one of his associates."

One of 200 copies printed at the Grabhorn Press by Edwin and Robert Grabhorn, January, 1954. Black buckram spine with handsome beige paper label laid on.
