Two volumes in one, consisting of the first edition of 1919 and the second edition of 1923. Printed by Taylor & Taylor, San Francisco. 12 x 9.25 inches. Charcoal gray buckram binding, with crisp gilt-stamped title and rules to the spine. Moderately bumped spine head and tail and corners. Rubbing along the edges but overall a fairly clean and attractive binding. The text block is firmly bound in. With 57 plus 87 numbered pages, three full-page, full-color plates, numerous B&W documentary photographs, and several pages of schematic drawings showing details of construction and specifications for the Latin tiles. Most pages with a tidemark in the lower inside corner, generally not into the images and a cosmetic issue only. Page 85 beginning to separate. Previous owner name in neat stamp to the front pastedown and to the front FEP. Else a clean copy. A Very Good Minus copy. This book constitutes a significant archival record not so much on account of the roofing tiles being show-cased but rather on account of the many significant buildings illustrated, including private residences, public structures, and rehabilitated California missions. Highly evocative photo-plates of a landscape of yester-year, many of the buildings having been since pulled down to make way for what passes as progress.
