This is a bilingual edition; principal text is in Chinese and secondary text is in English. First edition, presumed first printing, 1978. Printed and bound in Taiwan. Light gray buckram hardboard binding, with crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the front board and to the spine. Unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. 15 x 10.5 inches. Text block firmly bound in. With 216 numbered pages, and with 88 plates, as called for, all full-page and almost all full-color, on heavy-weight coated stock. Fore-edge lightly foxed, almost not at all on to the pages themselves. Else a very clean volume. Gently read. No remainder marks. Lovely full-pictorial DJ, unclipped and virtually unrubbed. The pictorial DJ protected by the original clear Mylar over-wrapper. A Very Good copy in a Near Fine DJ. Four monk-artists of the Late Ming are profiled: Chien-chiang, Shih-ch'i, Shih-t'ao, and Pa-ta-shan-jen.

Green cloth binding, with gilt-stamped design and white-stamped lettering. Generally unbumped spine head and tail, with fairly sharp corners. Hinges a little shaken but text bloxk remains firmly bound in. Approximately 13.75 x 10.25 inches. 6 pages of text, with 209 featured items, each with accompanying plate, including several full-page, full-color plates. Followed by 23 numbered pages of textual commentary and notes as to each featured item, and with drawings and map. A reasonably clean copy. Moderate shelf life. A Very Good Minus copy. Scarce in any condition.

From a limited edition of 1200 copies. The color lithographs are from the press of Mourlot frères.12.75 x 10 inches. Plain paper wrappers with block lettering to the front. A small tidewater mark to the lower inner corner of the front and back wrapper, not into the text block. The binding is in a delicate state. The front wrapper is gradually detaching. The signatures are gradually loosening. Lightly bumped corners. With 107 numbered pages and with 15 full-page plates, four of which are in color. The plates on coated stock. All the plates are very clean except that B&W Plate 11 has a smudge in the lower margin, not into the plate. Else a clean copy, inside and out. A Very Good Minus copy. Also included is a pristine 3-page price list. This catalog details two series plus 123 drawings, watercolors and prints by Hiroshige; 15 prints by Hiroshige II; and 4 prints by Eisen. From the private library of Herbert McLean Evans. Evans [1882-1971] was a highly regarded U.S. anatomist and embryologist. He was an ardent collector of rare books and of Japanese ukiyo-e prints. The Galerie Berès, facing the south-west wing of the Louvre, which stands across the river, was founded by Huguette Berès in 1951 and is now run by Anisabelle Berès, her daughter. Its twin focus has been, from Day One, on the graphic arts from the Far East and the avant-garde movements in 19th century France.

The slipcase with minor soiling to the underside. A Fine copy in a Near Fine slipcase. Iki translates loosely as chic or style. Sections on bijin-ga, theatre, hair ornaments, combs, purses, accessories, tea houses, lanterns, food, and clothing, costumes and fabrics. Interspersed are charming ukiyo-e illustrations.

A catalog of Japanese ukiyo-e prints from the estate of Frederic May of Washington, D.C., sold May 6-10, 1918. Printed and bound in USA. Approximately 10 x 6.75 inches. Plain beige wrappers, with black titling to the front wrapper. Light age-spotting to the wrappers. The book is almost split in half, barely holding by a few string bindings along the spine, hence described as disbound for all practical purposes. Unnumbered pages detailing 1297 lots. With numerous monochrome photo plates. Significantly, prices realized are noted in pencil throughout. A very clean and attractive copy. A Good Minus copy. Very scarce in any condition. The sale is widely regarded as one of the most important sales of the first half of the 20th century of Japanese color prints. So listed at p. 10, The Evolution of Ukiyoé: The Artistic, Economic and Social Significance of Japanese Wood-Block Prints, by Takahashi Sei-Ichiro, 1955.

From an auction of May 15th to 16th, 1919 featuring the property of Mr. Judson D. Metzgar, Moline, IL. Includes Lot Nos. 1 to 1243. 10 x 7 inches. Spine perished. May have had brown over-wrappers when first issued. Plain beige wrappers with black-stamped lettering. Wrappers with light soiling. Text block still holding but signatures threatening to separate at spine head and tail. With unnumbered pages of text and with XXIII B&W plates, being reproductions of Japanese woodblock prints. A fairly clean copy. A Good Plus copy. From the private library of Herbert McLean Evans, with his initials in soft lead pencil to the back of the front wrapper and his ex libris sticker at the bottom. Evans [1882-1971] was a highly regarded U.S. anatomist and embryologist. He was an ardent collector of rare books and of Japanese ukiyo-e prints. As for Judson D. Metzgar, [1870-1958], in addition to being a collector, Metzgar was also author of Adventures in Japanese Prints (Grabhorn Press, ca. 1940) and similar works. In addition to the 1919 catalogue, a catalogue for the public sale of part of Metzgar’s collection was conducted at the American Art Association in New York on November 13th & 14th, 1916. The sale is widely regarded as one of the most important sales of the first half of the 20th century of Japanese color prints. The Metzgar sale of 1916 is listed at p. 10, The Evolution of Ukiyoé: The Artistic, Economic and Social Significance of Japanese Wood-Block Prints, by Takahashi Sei-Ichiro, 1955.

On the reverse side of each sheet is a detailed description of the artist [if known] and the art object(s). Sheet size is about 8.75 x 6.25 inches. The double sheets are 17.5 x 6.25 inches. All housed in a simple gray card stock portfolio, the portfolio wtih plain black lettering. An immensely clean set of plates. A Fine copy in a Fine portfolio. Featured artists include Jihei, Sharaku, Eisho, Kunimasa, Hokusai, Masanobu, and Koryusai.

Brick red silk [or silk-like] binding, with crisp black-stamped lettering to the spine and a crisp gilt-stamped image to front board depicting five birds in flight. Unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. Exceptionally clean binding. 11.5 x 9 inches. Handsome pictorial pastedowns. As to the text in Japanese, with 304 numbered pages in Japanese, interspersed with 89 stunning full-color, full-page plates, some of which are fold-out. Identification and commentary appear in Japanese opposite each plate page. All plates specially printed on coated stock and tipped in. As to the text in English, with LXVII numbered pages in English including Introduction: The Characteristics of the Art of the Heian Period and Notes on the Plates. An immensely clean copy, and very tight. Either unread or very gently read. Fairly trivial semi-crease to the blank sheet opposite folding plate no. 45. With the original, soft plastic, clear dust jacket. Also present is the slipcase of brown paper hardboards with gilt-stamped Japanese characters to the spine and rubbing front and back. Slipcase with a 3-inch split starting along ther bottom but holding fast. A Near Fine copy in a Near Fine DJ in a Very Good slipcase.

With 44 numbered pages of text itemizing 354 items followed by 23 B&W plates, being reproductions of Japanese woodblock prints. Name of a previous owner, Judson D. Metzgar, in neat ink hand at top of title page. Else generally a clean copy. A Very Good Minus copy. Judson D. Metzgar, [1870-1958], in addition to being a collector of ukiyo-e, was also author of Adventures in Japanese Prints (Grabhorn Press, ca. 1940) and similar works. At least two catalogue are known to exist [1916 and 1919] for the public sale of part of Metzgar’s collection at the American Art Association in New York.
