History of Art in Persia, Chipiez, Charles; Perrot, Georges
206 Chipiez, Charles; Perrot, Georges History of Art in Persia
London, England Chapman and Hall, Limited 1892 Presumed First Edition Half-Leather Good Plus 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
"Illustrated with two hundred and fifty-four engravings in the text and twelve steel and coloured plates." Translated from the French of both authors. Apparently not published in French prior to the Chapman and Hall edition, thus presumed first edition, and believed issued before the American edition of A. C. Armstrong & Son, NY. Printed by William Clowes and Sons, London. Bound in half morocco, the spine with false hubs and with attractive gilt-stamped lettering and decoration. The leather of a medium green color, now faded to medium brown along the edges, and the spine evenly sunned to a medium brown color. The boards in a handsome greenish-white cloth with tweed-like graining. Unbumped spine head and tail, with fairly sharp if lightly abraded corners. Strong hinges. Text block firmly bound in. 10.25 x 6.75 inches. T.E.G. Handsome marble pastedowns and opposite FEPs, all exceptionally clean. With xii and 508 numbered pages. With XII steel-engraved plates, as called for, 4 of which are in color. Also with 254 B&W illustrations, including maps, elevations, plans, and details, and with 8 tail-pieces. Pull-out plates include Plate IV, Persepolis, Hypostyle Hall of Xerxes - Geometrical Elevation; Plate VII, Persepolis, Hall of a Hundred Columns - Geometrical Elevation and Longitudinal Section; and Plate VIII, Persepolis, Hall of a Hundred Columns - Perspective View of Interior. Several of the plates with pronounced tidemarks to the lower corner margins and some spotting at the top margins. However, all four color plates are virtually blemish-free, as are pull-out Plates IV and VII. As to the text block as such, very occasional foxing near the page tops, especially at the preliminaries. The pages show mild age toning. Else a clean volume, with evidence of moderate shelf life. Gently read. Uncommonly found in half leather; most copies were issued in full cloth. Down-graded to Good Plus on account of the unsightly tidemarks affecting some of the plates. Otherwise would be Very Good. With thanks to Wikipedia for the following: Charles Chipiez [1835-1901] was an influential French architect, Egyptologist, Iranologist, and an avid historian of the ancient world's architecture. Chipiez with the help of French architect, hellenist, and architectural historian Georges Perrot [1832-1914] wrote some of the most detailed description of the architectural achievements of the ancient world in such places as Egypt, Greece, Persia, Lydia, Lycia and Assyria. Chipiez would also create some of the most detailed virtual architectural drawings of the ancient monuments that once stood erect, bringing them to life.
