This is copy no. 430 of 500 copies only. This is the catalogue for an exhibit of various Chinese art works and artefacts. Essentially a text in English but with some explanatory material in Chinese. First printing of the first edition. Printed and presumed bound in Hong Kong. Green cloth binding, with crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the front board and spine. Unbumped spine head and tail, and with sharp corners. Text block firmly bound in. 11.75 x 8.5 inches. Unnumbered pages of text and plates. With map, an original calligraphy, and with 46 featured art objects. Heavy coated stock with color plates for each item, many full-page. An immensely clean copy, and exceptionally tight. Either unread or very gently read. Lovely full-pictorial dust jacket, unclipped. There is moderate edge curl along the top of the DJ. A Near Fine copy in a Near Fine DJ. This is the third volume in a series of exhibitions which document China's artistic tradition. This exhibition contained objects which evoke the concept of ritual and belief. Both of these concepts involve the placement of earthly objects for use to enhance an afterlife.

First published in 1908. This is the stated third edition, revised throughout. Author's preface dated August 1923. Printed and presumed bound by Butler & Tanner Limited, Frome and London. Medium brown buckram hardboard binding, with crisp black-stamped lettering and design to the front board and to the spine. Moderately bumped spine head and tail, with fairly sharp corners. Small red ink blotch just under the title on the front board, else an unsoiled binding. 10.25 x 7.75 inches. Front hinge cracked and somewhat tender. T.E.G. Fore- and bottom edges attractively deckled. With xx and 297 numbered pages, followed by a two-page compilation of reviews of the first edition. With XLI plates, all B&W save for the color frontispiece plate. All the plates appear to be free of age spotting or other demerits. The plates with tissue guards printed with notes. Mild-offsetting from the pastedowns to the opposite FEPs. Rear pastedown with tiny sticker of previous bookseller. Else an exceptionally clean and attractive volume, with light evidence of shelf life. Gently read. No remainder marks. A Very Good Minus copy. The frontispiece in this edition is a colored reproduction of a Sung painting in the famous collection of George Eumorfopoulos.

This edition was limited to 560 numbered copies on Van Gelder mould-made paper, of which this is copy No. 543. (There were also 30 copies issued on Batchelor's Kelmscott handmade paper.) The complete edition of the Eumorfopoulos Collection consisted of 11 volumes; the volumes are rarely encountered as a complete set. The Chinese, Corean and Siamese Paintings was the eleventh and last in the set. Printed and bound in Great Britain. Charles Whittingham and Griggs Ltd. at the Chiswick Press, Chancery Lane. Half-buckram black binding, including the spine and the fore-edges. Dark mustard-colored buckram boards with the attractive texture of rough canvas. Fairly crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the front board and to the spine. Moderately bumped and abraded at spine head and, especially, at tail. Also with moderately bumped and lightly abraded corners. Some rubbing along the extremities but overall a rather clean binding. 18 x 12.5 inches. Note that the front hinge is cracked but holding. With vii and 39 numbered pages of text. Followed by LXXV full-page plates, 23 of which are in color. All color plates with tissue guards. All 75 plates appear to be in very good plus to near fine condition. On the front pastedown in the lower corner appears a very small and discreet paste-on stamp from a London bookseller. Some toning and scattered foxing, not affecting plates. Else a very clean copy. Downgraded to a Very Good Minus copy on account of the condition of the binding. Scarce in any condition. This volume, as the title suggests, focuses on Chinese paintings. frescoes, paintings from Turfan, and Korean and Siamese paintings. With thanks to the Victoria & Albert Museum for the following: George Eumorfopoulos [1863-1939] was a distinguished British collector of European and Oriental porcelain. He initially collected European porcelain before moving on to create a renowned collection of early Chinese art, encompassing porcelain, archaic bronzes and jades, and sculpture and paintings. In 1934 and 1935 he sold his collection at below market value, allegedly for £100,000, to the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

This edition was limited to 100 numbered copies only for sale, printed on hand-made paper, signed by the authors and bound in saddle tan pigskin. This is copy no. 44. These copies were accompanied by a complete extra set of the color plates; please note that this copy does NOT include the extra set of plates. 11.5 x 9 inches. Gilt-stamped lettering to the spine. The boards are thick and the leather of the entire binding is smooth and supple and very little dried out. Generally unbumped spine head and tail. Very limited red rot at the spine head and tail has been arrested. The very top of the spine head is fragile. Virtually no shelf rubbing along the bottom edge of the boards. The corners are sharp except that the lower front corner has a minor bump. The text block is bound in with exceptional sturdiness. T.E.G. Fore- and bottom edges deckled to a handsome effect. With lvi and 236 numbered pages of text. Followed by XLVI plates, many of which are full page, 16 in color and the remainder in B&W. Most of the plates with tissue guards, and the plates and guards are in near fine condition. On the front pastedown at the bottom appears the very small and discreet ex libris sticker of the original owner, Herbert McLean Evans. Else a very clean copy, and rather tight. Gently read. A Very Good copy. Scarce in any condition. Somewhat rare and hard to find, at least in this condition. From the private library of Herbert McLean Evans. Evans [1882-1971] was a highly regarded U.S. anatomist and embryologist. He was an ardent collector of rare books and of Japanese ukiyo-e prints.

Immensely clean and attractive binding. 9.25 x 6.75 inches. 379 numbered pages. With numerous B&W illustrations throughout, including 553 marks. A few mildly dog-eared pages, lower corner of pp. 230-246. Else an exceptionally clean copy, and very tight. Very gently read. Lovely pictorial DJ, unclipped. Just a hint of rubbing to the DJ. DJ in a clear Mylar DJ protector. A Near Fine copy in a Fine DJ. The Bowes book is one of very few books written in English and devoted to the subject of marks and seals exclusively. This volume is an essential reference work to aid in the study of Japanese ceramics and decorative arts.

The rear gutter with a rip along half the length. Top edge gilt. Both hinge tender. Some cracking or giving between the page signatures of the book. Clean pastedowns and FEPs. With 576 numbered pages, plus additional pages of adverts. With XVI full-page plates, including color frontispiece plus 15 collotypes, plus 577 illustrations in the text. Very light age toning to the edges of the pages. Plates IV and V and page 10 detached but present. Front pastedown with the handsome book plate of Frederick George Lloyd. Else the interior is clean. Original plain paper wrappers, ecru-colored, with black- and red-stamped lettering to the front wrapper and to the spine.. Virtually unbumped spine head. Unbumped corners. The wrappers firmly attached to the text-block. The wrappers are exceptionally clean. The book contains 149 numbered pages of text interspersed with 11 text figures, plus 60 unnumbered pages of LX full-page duotone plates, as called for, the plates on glossy, heavy-weight stock. With gently deckled fore and bottom page edges to a handsome effect. The book is exceptionally clean, inside and out. A Very Good Plus copy. Chapters include: the political and economic history between Europe and Japan from the middle of the 16th to the end of the 17th century; how and when Japanese lacquers were acquired by the National Museum; historical and technical developement of the Japanese lacquer industry; and more.
