This volume is in Chinese, not in English. Large folio, 14.5 x 10.25 inches. Bound in beige silk-like cloth, with archaic design stamped in greens and black to the front board and with green lettering to the spine. Moderately bumped spine head, and with all corners gently bumped. Text block firmly bound in. Attractive pictorial pastedowns; light offsetting to the opposite FEPs. 126 numbered pages, and with many monochrome plates, including one large fold-out plate. The plates show many bronze and pottery objects unearthed at the group burial site. All plates on heavy, matte, non-glossy stock. Olive green dust jacket with gold-stamped Chinese characters and also with dark green image of a relic. The dust jacket with much rubbing and some edge wear. On the whole the book is very clean, inside and out. No remainder marks. A Very Good copy in a Good DJ. Scarce in any condition.

This book is written in Chinese. There is no English text. Volume 1 of an 8-volume set, Chinese Paintings Throughout History: The Palace Museum Collection. Volume I showcases Chinese painting from the Eastern Jin, Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties in the Palace Museum Collection. Later edition. May have been originally published in 1959 in Beijing by the People's Fine Arts Publishing House. Printed and bound in China. Olive-drab cloth hardboard binding, with crisp blind-stamped lettering to the front board and with crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the spine. Unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. Large folio, 15 x 13 inches. Text block firmly bound in. Attractive patterned pastedowns and FEPs. With 100 numbered pages of color plates featuring 19 paintings, including a large fold-out plate on p. 71, and with 18 numbered pages of text commentary about the plates. An exceptionally clean volume, inside and out, and quite tight. Very gently read. With a pictorial dust jacket, the jacket bumped at the spine tail and quite rubbed along all edges. In a light-duty cardboard pictorial slipcase, the slipcase with moderate scuffing and marks on the reverse side. A Near Fine volume in a Very Good Minus dust jacket in a Very Good slipcase. Very scarce in any condition.

Decorative pastedowns consisting of Japanese paper incorporating decorative grasses or similar. With 14 full-page illustrations of ukiyo-ye [ukiyo-e]. Internally very clean and tight, with no tears, stains or other noteworthy demerits in evidence. Probably a limited edition but not so stated. An About Very Good copy.

This book tells the story of Utagawa Hiroshige [1797-1858] as seen through the art collection of John Stewart Happer [1863-1936]. Presumed first edition. Printed and bound at the Tomoyé Press, San Francisco. Three variant bindings are known to exist. This copy quarter-bound cloth with decorative pattern suggestive of falling autumn leaves. With a Japanese-style sewn string binding along the spine. Medium brown custom paper hardboards, with brown-stamped lettering to the front board. (The other variants include: the same format except without sewn string binding; and a plain paper-covered hardboard style.) Slight chipping at the spine head. Generally unbumped spine tail, with fairly sharp corners. Very clean binding. 8 x 6 inches. Text block firmly bound in. Pastedowns lined with hand-made [?] Japanese paper. With vii and 84 numbered pages of text on light brown paper, and several full-page duotone plates, all on coated beige stock. A very clean volume, and fairly tight, with little hint of shelf life. Very gently read. No remainder marks. The text pages are moderately age-toned. A Very Good copy. Includes reproductions of prints from the John Stewart Happer Collection.

Spine head and tail are moderately bumped and are very rubbed. Corners are significantly bumped, with some losses of the over-paper. Volume is slightly shaken although text block firmly bound in. 11.75 x 8.75 inches. With xv and 73 numbered pages of text, interspersed with XLVII full-page plates on semi-glossy stock. Plate I is in color and is fold-out. Remaining plates are in B&W and with at least one double-page plate. Some plates with tissue guards. Contents generally very clean. A Good Minus copy.

Ce n'est pas une édition bilingue. Texte en français uniquement, pas en anglais. This is not a bilingual edition. Text in French only, not in English. No date but circa 1930. Presumed first edition. Presumed printed and bound in France. Unbound text sheets plus loose plates, all in a portfolio. Size of sheets is 32 x 24.5 cm. (12.5 x 9.5 inches) as folded. Half title page, title page, and 7 unnumbered pages of main text and plate commentary. Text of the plate commentary section in double columns. There are 24 unbound monochrome plates, as called for. Thus no missing plates. Each plate is tipped on to a backing sheet. Plate 21 with a very small piece of the backing sheet missing at the lower left corner, not affecting the plate itself. The pages and plates are impressively clean. The portfolio of mustard yellow paper-covered hardboards, with reddish-orange lettering to the front board and to the spine. The gutters of the portfolio are superficially cracked (that is, the yellow paper has separated) but the under-cloth remains intact. With a ribbon tie along the fore-edge. A Very Good set of unbound sheets in a Good Only portfolio. Overall Very Good Minus.
