Presumed first printings. This is a complete set of two volumes. The volumes cover bronzes and jade, painting and sculpture, ceramics and lacquer, and decorative arts. 14.5 x 10.5 inches. Off-white leatherette bindings with crisp gold lettering and design. Unbumped spine heads and tails, with sharp corners, except the lower corner of Volume I has a moderate bump. Vol. I with 184 numbered pages, with 131 full-page plates, many of which are in color. Vol. II with 184 numbered pages, with 128 full-page plates, many of which are in color. Exceptionally clean books inside and out, and no page rippling. Almost no hint of shelf life to the books. Lovely full-pictorial unclipped DJs. In the original light-duty cardboard slipcases, the cases in pale yellow with red lettering. Fine copies in Fine DJs in Very Good Plus slipcases.

Complete in three volumes of tipped-in color plates, each with accompanying text booklet. A bilingual publication, the plate volumes with principal text in Japanese and secondary text in English. The text volumes with full text in both English and Japanese. Published serially between 1960 and 1962. Size is 39 x 29.5 cm. (15.5 x 11.75 inches). The plate volumes are bound in beige heather cloth, with crisp gilt-stamped Japanese characters to the front boards and to the spines. The South Section plate volume with 119 numbered plates, the Middle Section plate volume with 130 numbered plates, and the North Section plate volume with 125 numbered plates. The three text volumes are in wrappers. Each text volume and accompanying plate volume set in a drop-back box, thus a total of three boxes. Presumed first and only printing of this deluxe edition. (Later reprinted in condensed trade editions.) Printed and bound in Japan. All illustrations in the plate volumes are tipped in on heavy stock. Virtually all plates are in color. As to all volumes, unbumped spine heads and tails, with sharp corners. A very clean set of books, and each volume is rather tight. No remainder marks. Very gently read. No DJs to the plate volumes, as issued. Moderate page waviness along the fore edge to all three plate volumes, quite minor. An immensely clean and attractive set of 3 plate volumes and 3 text volumes. In the original custom-made drop-back boxes, charcoal gray cloth over heavy cardboard, and with near pristine paper labels to the fronts and spines. Lightest soiling to the box exteriors. Near Fine volumes in Very Good Plus boxes. Very scarce in any condition. The antiquities at the treasure house that belongs to To-dai-ji, Nara, Japan, artifacts connected to Emperor Shomu (701-756) and Empress Komyo (701-760), as well as arts and crafts of the Tempyo period of Japanese history.

400 copies of this book were produced by The Grabhorn Press, San Francisco. Issued November 1962. Quarter black buckram, with light brown and beige Japan paper boards with an original geometric design, and with a complementary paper label in like colors to the spine. 15.25 x 10.25 inches. The binding is in superb condition, with the merest hint of age fading along the very edges of the unbumped spine head and tail. All corners sharp. Deckled fore- and bottom edges to a handsome effect. Unnumbered pages featuring a title page, colophon page, preface, 28 pages of full-color, full-page prints, and 28 respective commentaries. An immaculate copy, and very tight. Either unread or very gently read. The unprinted plain red DJ is lightly sunned; it has done its job and protected the book binding very well. The DJ protected by a new Brodart dust cover. No slipcase. A Fine copy in a Near Fine DJ. This book completes the series of three volumes from the Collection of Edwin and Marjorie Grabhorn.

This volume is in Chinese, not in English. Large folio, 14.5 x 10.25 inches. Bound in beige silk-like cloth, with archaic design stamped in greens and black to the front board and with green lettering to the spine. Moderately bumped spine head, and with all corners gently bumped. Text block firmly bound in. Attractive pictorial pastedowns; light offsetting to the opposite FEPs. 126 numbered pages, and with many monochrome plates, including one large fold-out plate. The plates show many bronze and pottery objects unearthed at the group burial site. All plates on heavy, matte, non-glossy stock. Olive green dust jacket with gold-stamped Chinese characters and also with dark green image of a relic. The dust jacket with much rubbing and some edge wear. On the whole the book is very clean, inside and out. On the rear endpaper there is a very tiny stamp from a bookseller, The House of Sung. No remainder marks. A Very Good copy in a Good DJ. Scarce in any condition.
