Text in French only, not in English. Printed in France. From a limited edition of 1000 copies. Issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Utamaro. The pochoir colors are from the press of Beaufumé. 12.75 x 10 inches. Plain paper wrappers with block lettering to the front. The wrapper are very clean but have some fading here and there. With unnumbered pages and with 4 plates, one of which is double-page. The plates on coated stock. All the plates are very clean. Previous owner initials in pencil at top of reverse of front wrapper and at top of title page. Else a clean copy, inside and out. A Very Good Minus copy. This catalog details various paintings, woodblock prints, and books by Hiroshige; 15 prints by Utamaro. From the private library of Herbert McLean Evans. Evans [1882-1971] was a highly regarded U.S. anatomist and embryologist. He was an ardent collector of rare books and of Japanese ukiyo-e prints. The Galerie Berès, facing the south-west wing of the Louvre, which stands across the river, was founded by Huguette Berès in 1951 and is now run by Anisabelle Berès, her daughter. Its twin focus has been, from Day One, on the graphic arts from the Far East and the avant-garde movements in 19th century France.

The plain over-wrappers are beige and are printed in black leettering. The over-wrappers are detaching but mostly present. One edge somewhat crudely repaired with packing tape. A Good Plus copy. Gently bumped spine tail, and with fairly sharp corners. Text block firmly bound. No missing or loose pages. 319 + 15 numbered pages, with 20 full-page full-color plates, most with tissue guards. Also with 120 B&W plates, plus smaller B&W figures. All on heavy-weight semi-glossy paper. No remainder marks. Moderate age spotting to the pastedowns and opposite FEPs. Else a very clean copy, and rather tight. Gently read. No DJ. A Good copy. Also included is the original, 15-page English language prospectus for this edition, containing a table of contents for the book, an essay about ceramic art in the Sung Dynasty, a description of the color plates, and a list of the monochrome plates.

Unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. With 30 numbered pages of text, followed by 100 tipped-in color plates, all on heavy coated stock. Almost certainly unread. An immensely clean copy, and very tight. Handsome, pale yellow pictorial DJ showing a blue and white ceramic vase to the front and with title in Chinese characters to the spine. The DJ is unclipped. The book is in a custom-made medium-duty, gray cardboard nesting box, the box with title label affixed to the top. Also present is the original custom-made heavy-duty cardboard shipping box in double portfolio style. A Fine copy in a Fine DJ in a Near Fine nesting box in a Very Good shipping box. Very scarce in any condition. This work constitutes an illustrated survey of porcelains in the Shanghai Museum.

Lightly soiled binding, and with moderate rubbing and scraping along the spine. 11.5 x 9 inches. Moderately bumped and abraded spine head and tail and corners. Hinges very slightly tender but the text block still firmly bound in. Fore- and bottom edges deckled to a handsome effect. With color frontispiece (detached but fully intact) and tissue guard, and xxviii and 160 numbered pages of text, and with 160 monochrome plates on semi-glossy stock and with notes opposite each plate. No remainder marks. Apart from the issues noted with the binding, this is a very clean copy. A Good Plus copy. Much of the material in the exhibition was on loan from the Chinese Nationalist government; additional material came from significant European collections.
