Front board with black-stamped lettering and gilt-stamped design of a statue of a nude female. The spine is impressively clean. The boards are much rubbed and abraded, especially the rear board. The portfolio retains its original cloth ties, now somewhat age-spotted but quite sturdy. Slipped in is a pristine admission card to the invitation-only preview for May 20, 1911. This item overall Very Good. Rare in any condition. This auction consisted of select marbles, bronzes, ceramics and other art objects from the collection of Aleksandr Nelidov [1836-1910] aka Alexander Nelidow. With thanks to Wikipedia for the following: "Studied at St. Petersburg University. Entered diplomatic service in 1855. Secretary to the Russian embassies at Athens, Munich and Vienna. Councillor to the Russian embassy in Constantinople, 1872. Ambassador to Saxony, 1879. Ambassador to Italy, 1897-1903. Ambassador to France, 1903-1910." This sale at Galerie Georges Petit featured the so-called Alexander Nelidow bronze statuette [Lot 43], also known as Alexander with the Lance, a reference to Alexander the Great. This controversial piece, described in the past as an ancient Roman bronze, may more accurately be said to be a Renaissance statuette. Currently housed at the Fogg Art Museum.
