Generally unbumped spine head and tail, and with fairly sharp corners. A bit of shelf rubbing at the very top and bottom edges. Textblock firmly bound in. T.E.G. With xlii and 168 numbered pages. Color frontispiece tipped in. With numerous full-page plates, mostly archival photos, in monochrome. All plates on glossy stock. Also with numerous B&W figures and drawings. Slipped in to the rear pocket is a pristine fold-out map showing the position of monuments and burials in Roman York. An immensely clean book, inside and out. Full-pictorial dust jacket is present. Not price-clipped. Chipping to the spine head and a cleanly repaired tear at the spine tail. A Very Good Plus copy in a Very Good Minus dust jacket.

Prrinted and bound in Oxford, England. 11.75 x 9.75 inches. Medium brown buckram boards, with gilt-stamped lettering to the spine. The spine head and tail are bumped and abraded, and the corners are gently bumped. Ten articles are listed in the table of contents but only eight articles actually appear in the book. Missing are: IV, The Uranical Astrolabe....; and VIII, The Epigraphy of Middle English. Rather than having been removed after the fact, they were never bound in. The book contains xvi and 1 to 54 and 74 to 148 and 180 to 256 numbered pages, and with LXXXIII B&W plates, plus numerous B&W figures and some pull-out drawings and maps, including a superb plan of Corfe Castle in color. There is a substantial crack between the signature preceding page 180 and the following signature, but the text block remains bound in. A Good copy.

Printed in the USSR. Ivory buckram binding, with black- and gilt-stamped lettering and decoration to the spine. Moderately bumped spine head and tail and corners. Folio. 13.5 x 10.5 inches. Text block tightly bound in. Top edge tinted a gray-blue. 324 numbered pages, including about 28 pages of text at the front, and at the end are notes, an index and a bibliography. Hundreds of B&W photographs and drawings and building plans, all on coated stock. Plus numerous full-page and fold-out multi-tone plates by Kazakova, all on heavy beige stock. All pages of this book appear to be exceptionally clean. No foxing or off-setting. The pages still fairly tight. Very gently read. Lovely small-repeat-design DJ, unclipped. Just a hint of rubbing and age-toning to the DJ. There is a thin, vertical, red chalky line on the front wrapper, fairly trivial. The DJ is protected by a clear Mylar over-wrapper. A Very Good copy in a Very Good DJ. Scarce in any condition.

Two volumes in one, consisting of the first edition of 1919 and the second edition of 1923. Printed by Taylor & Taylor, San Francisco. 12 x 9.25 inches. Charcoal gray buckram binding, with crisp gilt-stamped title and rules to the spine. Moderately bumped spine head and tail and corners. Rubbing along the edges but overall a fairly clean and attractive binding. The text block is firmly bound in. With 57 plus 87 numbered pages, three full-page, full-color plates, numerous B&W documentary photographs, and several pages of schematic drawings showing details of construction and specifications for the Latin tiles. Most pages with a tidemark in the lower inside corner, generally not into the images and a cosmetic issue only. Page 85 beginning to separate. Previous owner name in neat stamp to the front pastedown and to the front FEP. Else a clean copy. A Very Good Minus copy. This book constitutes a significant archival record not so much on account of the roofing tiles being show-cased but rather on account of the many significant buildings illustrated, including private residences, public structures, and rehabilitated California missions. Highly evocative photo-plates of a landscape of yester-year, many of the buildings having been since pulled down to make way for what passes as progress.

Spine has been crudely reinforced with black tape, unattractive but doing the job of preventing the spine from deteriorating. Moderately bumped corners. 87 numbered pages, with a full-page, full-color frontispiece and with numerous B&W documentary photographs, and several pages of schematic drawings showing details of construction and specifications for the Latin tiles. A very clean copy. A Good Plus copy. This is copy no. 61 of a limited edition of 275 copies only. Printed and bound by the Lent & Graff Company, NY. Photographs by Lawrence X. Champeaux, NY. Photogravures by A. W. Elson & Co., Boston. Approximately 13 x 10 inches. Originally issued bound in semi-stiff beige wrappers with over-wrappers. This copy presumed bound by original or early owner, Howard Young Gallery, in contemporary oxblood-colored half morocco, with crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the spine, and with oxblood-colored buckram boards. Hubbed spine to a handsome effect. Front hinge slightly tender and with 2-inch clean crack along the top of the front gutter, generally a cosmetic issue. Gently bumped/abraded spine tail and lower corners. Binding generally unsoiled and well-preserved. A most attractive binding. Gray paper pastedowns and FEPs. Text block firmly bound in. Fore- and bottom edges attractively deckled. With several unnumbered pages of introductory text, plus unnumbered pages in which 924 auction lots are itemized. With approximately two dozen full-page photogravures depicting interior views of the mansion plus numerous B&W photogravures with additional views, including the exterior and interior. Also with many photographs, referenced by lot number, of various furniture and furnishings. This volume also includes Ground Floor Plans of Mansion as two double-page spreads: basement plan, first floor, second floor, third floor, fourth floor, and studio. Small oval purple ink stamp of previous owner to the top corner of the front pastedown. Front FEP with a 3-inch piece of clear tape near the bottom corner, quite minor. Following FEP with the number 112 stamped neatly to the upper corner. One or two text pages with a light blemish. Else an exceptionally clean copy. A hint of age toning to all pages, quite minor. No remainder marks. A Very Good copy. Scarce in any condition. This book is the auction catalog for the sale of the mansion, and contents of said mansion, of Henry James Smith and located at 871 Fifth Avenue, New York. The sale took place over the course of five days, January 18-22 inclusive, 1910. The mansion, designed by architect William Schickel, was completed in 1883. Eventually it was almost entirely rebuilt by the firm of McKim, Mead & White. Demolition was scheduled for 1942.

With CCLVI and 516 numbered pages, and with 43 B&W figures. Text printed by Håkan Ohlsson, Lund. With unstated limitation but almost certainly no more than 500 copies printed in the first edition. Principal text in English, with secondary text in German and Latin. Original plain paper wrappers in a soft gray-brown color, with fairly crisp black-stamped lettering to the front wrapper and to the spine. Spine perishing at the top inch and the bottom half-inch, but the wrappers remain largely intact. Moderate spine lean to the text block. Minor blemishes to the wrappers but on the whole clean and presentable. 12 x 9 inches. Deckled fore- and bottom edges to a handsome effect. Scarcely any age toning to the pages. The book is very clean, inside and out, except as noted. Errata slip laid in. A Very Good Minus copy. Very scarce in any condition. Note: the Plates volume contained 168 plates in a softcover portfolio. The plates were sold separately by the Swedish Institute of Rome. Arvid Andrén [1902-1999] was a scholar, teacher, humanist and poet. Architectural Terracottas from Etrusco-Italic Temples constitutes his PhD dissertation. A highly ambitious and comprehensive work, it is still a main resource in the field of Classical archaeology and is used as a reference tool by scholars and students all over the world. In addition to his important scholarship, he shared his love of Rome and ancient Italy with students and colleagues as Director of the Swedish Institute in Rome. His collection of Etruscan and Roman antiquities is now in the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo, and is in the process of publication.

Privately printed by Norman T. A. Munder & Co., Baltimore, MD. Text by the estate architect Welles Bosworth and photography by the celebrated Arnold Genthe. Technically an ex-library copy but with very few of the usual ex-library markings. Quarter spine in red buckram and with semi-stiff olive drab paper hardbaords. Simple black-stamped title to the front board. Bound with purple ribbon ties; in essence stab-sewn in the Japanese manner. The purple ribbin is faded and at one point is cut. The paper boards are lightly soiled. Very gently abraded spine head and tail. Round corners, as issued. 12 x 9.25 inches. Text block firmly bound in. Handmade Japan-paper pastedowns in floral pattern of soft gray over ivory. With unnumbered pages, including three pages of introductory text and of text and illustrations. With approximately 52 full-page monochrome photoplates. Plates with explanatory text on the opposite page. A few plates with very light marginal fingering marks but on the whole the plates are very clean. Also present is a B&W fold-out General Plan of House and Gardens. Plan no longer bound in. Minor loss along the left margin, not into the plan itself. Tears beginning at the top and bottom of the page fold of the Plan. No library marks whatsoewver to the book binding. Upper corner of first FEP is torn off, less than 1" square. Piece is present if restoration is desired. Punched university library stamp to the title page and also to the colophon page. Accession number in tiny and neat ink hand to the first page of the foreward along the inner edge. Else a clean volume, with evidence of moderate shelf life. A Very Good Minus copy. Unstated limitation. Somewhat rare in any condition. This book features the gardens at Kijkuit, a John D. Rockefeller country estate near Tarrytown, NY. Kijkuit -- meaning look-out -- was the name given by the 17th century Dutch settlers to the hill-top on which the Rockefeller country estate was eventually built.

Tissue-guarded frontispiece of lovely, sepia-tone drypoint plate. Thirteen unnumbered pages of text, including an introduction and a table of contents. Also with 246 numbered pages of B&W plates and illustrations, including sketches in pen, pencil and drypoint, and photographs by the author, and with measured drawings by Louis Skidmore. The archival architectural photos are not only of scholarly value but also are a poignant reminder of a vanishing England, as quite a few of the structures have since fallen into disrepair or have been demolished. Lindos est un site archéologique, une ville et une ancienne municipalité sur l'île de Rhodes, dans le Dodécanèse, Grèce. Des fouilles ont été effectuées à Lindos dans les années 1900 à 1914 et aussi en 1952 par l'Institut Carlsberg du Danemark. Primary text in French, and with occasional auxiliary text in Greek. NOT ex-library. Printed by Bianco Lunos Bogtrykkeri, Copenhagen. Gorgeous linen-like medium brown fabric bindings, with crisp red-stamped lettering and rules to the spines and the front boards. Generally unbumped spine heads and tails, with sharp corners. 12.75 x 9.75 inches. Text blocks firmly bound in. Vol. I with 289 numbered pages, Vol. II with 292-576 numbered pages. Each volume with numerous B&W figures, drawings, plans and archival photos, some of which are full-page. Includes, in fine condition, a folded map in color, Plate A, Lindos et ses Abords, as called for. Map approximately 22 x 28 inches and slipped into the rear of the Vol. II. All text and illustrations in both volumes on heavy, cream-colored matte stock. Both volumes immensely clean and quite tight. Either unread or very gently read. Attractive B&W pictorial DJs. All in a medium-duty, plain brown cardboard case, staple-fastened at top and bottom. Box with a lightly worn paper title label affixed to the spine. The box has done an excellent job of protecting the books. A Near Fine pair of volumes in Near Fine DJs in a Very Good case. With thanks to Wikipedia for the following: Lindos is an archaeological site, a town and a former municipality on the island of Rhodes, in the Dodecanese, Greece. Excavations were carried out at Lindos in the years 1900 to 1914 and again in 1952 by the Carlsberg Institute of Denmark, initially directed by K.F. Kinch and Christian Blinkenberg. The acropolis site was excavated down to bedrock and the foundations of all the buildings were uncovered.
