Bookplates from the Boston Public Library
2 Bookplates from the Boston Public Library
Boston, MA, U.S.A. First Edition Unbound Near Fine Manuscript 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall
Offered is a collection of approximately 30 different bookplates from the Boston Public Library, plus a few duplicates, as well as some bookplates associated with the Library of the University of Virginia. Presumed first printings though a few may be reissues. Many of the bookplates are from various collections in the Boston Public Library and their donations. Several appear to date to the early 20th century. A range of sizes from 24mo to smaller. Most are printed in B&W. A few with black and carmine colored lettering and design. Immensely clean; no evidence of tears or creasing. Condition is Near Fine to Fine. With thanks to James P. Keenan for the following Boston-related note regarding his bookplate business: "I spent days-weeks-months visiting libraries, looking at bookplates, learning about the artists, compiling checklists and evaluating condition of the plates. My friends and I would schedule appointments to visit the Print Department at the Boston Public Library. We’d spend hours at the library looking at bookplates and talking about the designs. Librarians would generally offer me one or several of their library’s bookplates as did bookbinders and printers that I worked with."
