From an auction of June 14th, 1920. 10 x 7 inches. Light brown over-wrappers with brown-stamped lettering. With 47 numbered pages of text itemizing 208 lots and with several B&W plates, being reproductions of Japanese woodblock prints. Generally a clean copy. A Very Good Minus copy. From the private library of Herbert McLean Evans, with his initials in soft lead pencil to the back of the front wrapper. Evans [1882-1971] was a highly regarded U.S. anatomist and embryologist. He was an ardent collector of rare books and of Japanese ukiyo-e prints.

This is a catalogue for an exhibit 2 March - 29 April 1984. Printed and bound in the USA. Very clean pictorial wrappers. Unbumped spine head and tail, with fairly sharp corners. Wrappers fan only slightly, trivial. 10 x 8 inches. Text block firmly bound in. With 68 numbered pages, and numerous B&W illustrations on medium-weight stock. Small rubbing spot to lower part of rear wrapper. Else a very clean volume. No remainder marks. A Very Good Plus copy. The following is modified from Wikipedia: "Decamps, born in Paris, travelled early in life in the East, and reproduced Oriental life and scenery with a bold fidelity to nature that puzzled conventional critics. His powers, however, soon came to be recognized, and he was ranked along with Delacroix and Ingres as one of the leaders of the French school. He was the most influential painter on Orientalism and was proclaimed the chief of the new Orientalist School."

For a sale of February 10th, 11th & 12th, 1921. With prices realized noted in pencil in the margins. Foreward by Carl Schraubstadter. 9.75 x 6.75 inches. Plain beige wrappers with black-stamped lettering. Tiny paper losses at spine head and tail. Wrappers are age-yellowed and lightly soiled and with previous owner name and address on back wrapper. Text block remains sound although signatures are threatening to separate. With many unnumbered pages of text, listing in detail 931 lots offered for sale. Also 102 B&W plates, being reproductions of Japanese woodblock prints. Light foxing near the preliminaries. A number of notations in pencil throughout. Else a clean copy. A Good Plus copy. The sale is widely regarded as one of the most important sales of the first half of the 20th century of Japanese color prints. So listed at p. 10, The Evolution of Ukiyoé: The Artistic, Economic and Social Significance of Japanese Wood-Block Prints, by Takahashi Sei-Ichiro, 1955. From the private library of Herbert McLean Evans. Evans [1882-1971] was a highly regarded U.S. anatomist and embryologist. He was an ardent collector of rare books and of Japanese ukiyo-e prints.

Catalogue for an auction of the Philippe Wiener collection at Jacques Seligmann & fils, Paris, in 1929. First and only edition. No. 80 of a numbered edition of 250 copies only. Published 29 October 1929 by L'Agence de Publicité et d'Impressions d'Art, Paris, for Jacques Seligmann et fils, Paris. Beautifully bound in contemporary bordeaux-colored half leather, with marbled-paper hardboards. Hubbed spine with crisp gilt-stamped lettering. Generally unbumped spine head and tail, with fairly sharp corners with moderate rubbing. Note that in a thin vertical line along most of the front and rear boards, and adjacent to the spine, there is evidence that some heavy paper or similar was once glued on and later removed as cleanly as possible. Else the binding is quite clean and the leather has a smooth hand. The marbled paper boards are impressively free of demerits. Text block firmly bound in. 12.5 x 10.5 inches. T.E.G. Handsome marbled paper pastedowns and FEPs. Cream-colored heavy-weight paper. With 10 pages of detailed introductory text, principally focusing on 18th century furniture from the Wiener collection, followed by CX [110] numbered plates, almost all of which are full page. Presumed heliotype gravures. A prefatory notes page corresponds to each plate. The interior is impressively clean. A Very Good Minus book. Summary: Watercolors, drawings, gouaches, pastels. Paintings. Sculptures. Various objects. Pendulums, bronzes. Furniture. Tapestries. Jacques Seligmann [1858 - 1923] was a highly successful antiquarian and art dealer with businesses in both Paris and New York. He was one of the first to foster American interest in building collections of European art. After his death his son Germaine continued the business.
