Shanxi Tang Sancai Yong; T'ang Dynasty Sancai Tomb Pottery in Shensi
11 Shanxi Tang Sancai Yong; T'ang Dynasty Sancai Tomb Pottery in Shensi
Wen wu chu ban She 1964 Presumed First Edition Decorative Boards Very Good No Jacket Folio - over 12" - 15" tall
This book is in Chinese only, not in English. Ex Library but with very few of the usual ex library markings; no markings whatever on the plate pages. 14.5 x 10.25 inches. Aubergine cloth spine, with with heavy-duty, paper-covered hardboards, the front board with a large color plate laid in. Gently bumped corners, else a rather clean and attractive binding. Title page, table of contents and introduction, followed by 20 full-page, full-color plates, tipped in. A Very Good copy. "Sancai" refers to a technique that mainly uses the three colors of yellow, green and white in glazed pottery manufacture. Sancai tomb pottery perhaps reached the height of its refinement during the T'ang Dynasty. This book features 20 tricolored burial figurines from the T'ang Dynasty unearthed in Shensi Province. Several thousand such figurines have been unearthed in Shensi since 1949. These objects are made in glazed patterns, fired at a relatively low temperature. Upon examination of these objects, one can readily see the high level of T'ang artistic attainment. It is worth noting that at the peak of sancai production, many different kilns throughout China were making these pieces. The fall of the T'ang dynasty did not bring about the end of the sancai tradition. The dazzling invention of form and brilliant glazes of sancai left an indelible mark on the ceramic traditions of China. The skills that the Chinese potter learned in making elaborate wares for the tomb, with easily formed low fired clays, were soon transferred into the production of high fired stoneware and porcelain. The technology for producing brilliantly coloured glazes by the addition of metallic oxides also had its roots in sancai . And so although some scholars have considered sancai a detour in the inexorable evolution of porcelain, the most current scholarship shows its essential role in the history of Chinese ceramics.
