Art of Old Japan, Rare Specimens of Pewter ....., Matsuki, Bunkio, Ed.
4 Matsuki, Bunkio, Ed. Art of Old Japan, Rare Specimens of Pewter .....
New York, New York, U.S.A. The American Art Association 1904 First Edition Buckram Very Good Ex-Library 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
Text in English. Printed and bound in the USA. Ex library but with very few of the usual ex library markings. From the library of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The title page bearing cut-out-dots stamp of the museum and also a white and black "withdrawn" label. The text pages and the illustrations are not defaced in any respect, and all the original pages and illustrations are believed to be present. The book has been handsomely rebound in clean and bright heavy-duty medium brown buckram, with crisp gilt-stamped titling to the spine. Unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. 8.5 x 6.25 inches. Fore-edge deckled to a handsome effect. Immensely clean new pastedowns and FEPs. With unnumbered pages and with numerous full-page B&W photo illus., as well as duo-tone and multi-tone illustrations, some fold-out, all in excellent condition. Apart from the very limited ex library markings previously noted, this is an exceptionally clean copy, and rather tight, with just a hint of shelf life. Note that the last page of the glossary shows off-setting, presumably from the original binding. Very gently read. No remainder marks. No dust jacket is present. A Very Good copy. This is a highly detailed and well illustrated catalogue of significant Japanese art and antiques offered at auction in New York on January 21-23, 1904. Pewter, carvings in jade, stone and wood, lanterns, gold lacquerware and other scarce objects were selected by Bunkio Matsuki for this sale. The catalogue itemizes 585 lots and includes a glossary.
