About Our Store

We carry a choice selection of books, prints and ephemera for the discriminating customer. We deal principally in scholarly and antiquarian books, with an emphasis on art books. We also sell original prints, including but not limited to antique Japanese ukiyo-e prints. Additionally we go in for occasional ephemera. Our selection is more eclectic and esoteric than predictable and mainstream.

Our stock needs to be replenished continually. We are always interested in purchasing art books, from fine single copies to entire libraries. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you are located in or near the San Francisco Bay Area and you have a grouping of art books in need of a new home. Note that we do advance purchases from estate sales so if you are an estate sale agent and you are seeking a book dealer who will do a library buy-out on realistic terms, please get in touch with us. We also accept select items on a consignment basis. (Please ask about our consignment terms.) Additionally we are available for professional appraisals. (Please refer to our Appraisal page.)

About Our Descriptions

We strive to be accurate and complete when describing our books, prints and other items. Our descriptions tend to be conservative; what another seller might describe as Near Fine we are more likely to call Very Good Plus or Very Good.

We are finicky about condition. All of our books are hand-selected and are cleaned before we shelve them. Virtually all of our books, dust jackets and other paper items are free of tobacco odor and free of dampstain. We will inform you if we believe that a fine or rare book in our inventory is musty or otherwise suspect. The same, of course, holds true for our prints and ephemera.

The pictures you see on our website are of the actual books and prints we have in stock. If you need any additional information, or if you need photographs for items priced at $300 or more, please contact us. Unfortunately we do not have the capability to provide multiple digital images for items at a lower price point.

About Us and Our Philosophy

Opened in September 2003 by Marc Sena Carrel, our fine paper collectibles store has been in business for over ten years. The founder became infatuated with the printed word and illustrations as a child reader, turned to book sleuthing in his teenage years, and after meanderings in Europe, bouts working in the Hollywood film industry, stints freelancing as a copy editor and proofreader, intervals teaching ESL in public schools, and a career investigating civil rights disputes in education for the Feds finally became a bookseller, trusting senescence would not overtake him too soon.

We're located in the San Francisco Bay Area, on the Pacific coast just south of San Francisco. Although we are almost exclusively an on-line presence we're very occasionally open by appointment we have close ties to our north peninsula community, including a history of volunteer service to a number of Friends of the Library organizations.

Our goal is to create an environment that encourages a classical education (to the extent possible nowadays), the development of the life of the mind (for those not already fully in the know), and the exercise of the creative spirit (directly or vicariously), especially through exposure to language and the visual arts, all this in the context of droll perspective and eclectic taste. Vita brevis, ars longa is our motto. Or, as the late-medieval author Chaucer observed, "The lyf so short, the craft so long to lerne." Our takeaway is that, although authors and artists eventually die and are often forgotten, the arts endure.
